We review the construction of Heegaard Floer homology for closed three-manifolds and also for knots and links in the three-sphere. We also discuss three applications of this invariant to knot theory: studying the Thurston norm of a link complement, the slice genus of a knot, and the unknotting number of a knot. We emphasize the application to the Thurston norm, and illustrate the theory in the case of the Conway link.

We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associa...

These are the lecture notes for a course on Heegaard Floer homology held at PCMI in Summer 2019. We describe Heegaard diagrams, Heegaard Floer homology, knot Floer homology, and the relationship between the knot and 3-manifold invariants.

In this paper, we give an algorithm to compute the hat version of the Heegaard Floer homology of a closed oriented three-manifold. This method also allows us to compute the filtrations coming from a null-homologous link in a three-manifold.

In ``Knots in lattice homology", Ozsv\'ath, Stipsicz, and Szab\'o showed that knot lattice homology satisfies a surgery formula similar to the one relating knot Floer homology and Heegaard Floer homology, and in previous work, I showed that knot lattice homology is the persistent homology of a doubly filtered space. Here I provide an iterable version of the surgery formula that, provided the initial knot lattice space with flip map, produces a space isomorphic as a doubly-fil...

For any three-manifold presented as surgery on a framed link (L,\Lambda) in an integral homology sphere, Manolescu and Ozsv\'ath construct a hypercube of chain complexes whose homology calculates the Heegaard Floer homology of \Lambda-framed surgery on Y. This carries a natural filtration that exists on any hypercube of chain complexes; we study the E_2 page of the associated spectral sequence, called Framed Floer homology. One purpose of this paper is to show that Framed Flo...

Let M be a closed, connected and oriented 3-manifold. This article is the first of a five part series that constructs an isomorphism between the Heegaard Floer homology groups of M and the corresponding Seiberg-Witten Floer homology groups of M.

Motivated by a result of L.P. Roberts on rational blow-downs in Heegaard-Floer homology, we study such operations along 3-manifolds that arise as branched double covers of $S^{3}$ along several non-alternating, slice knots.

Suppose that a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a finite surgery, Boyer and Zhang proved that the surgery slope must be either integral or half-integral, and they conjectured that the latter case does not happen. Using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, we prove that if a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a half-integral finite surgery, then the knot must have the same knot Floer homology as one of eight non-hyperbolic knots which are known to admit such surgeries,...

This paper establishes a new technique that enables us to access some fundamental structural properties of instanton Floer homology. As an application, we establish, for the first time, a relation between the instanton Floer homology of a $3$-manifold or a null-homologous knot inside a $3$-manifold and the Heegaard diagram of that $3$-manifold or knot. We further use this relation to compute the instanton knot homology of some families of $(1,1)$-knots, including all torus kn...
