Super-resolution localization microscopy is based on determining the positions of individual fluorescent markers in a sample. The major challenge in reaching an ever higher localization precision lies in the limited number of collected photons from single emitters. To tackle this issue, it has been shown that one can exploit the increased photostability at low temperatures, reaching localization precisions in the sub-nanometer range. Another crucial ingredient of single-molec...

While experiments with one or two quantum emitters have become routine in various laboratories, scalable platforms for efficient optical coupling of many quantum systems remain elusive. To address this issue, we report on chip-based systems made of one-dimensional subwavelength dielectric waveguides (nanoguides) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules. After discussing the design and fabrication requirements, we present data on coherent linear and nonlinear spectroscopy...

Single molecule spectroscopy aims at unveiling often hidden but potentially very important contributions of single entities to a system's ensemble response. Albeit contributing tremendously to our ever growing understanding of molecular processes the fundamental question of temporal evolution, or change, has thus far been inaccessible, resulting in a static picture of a dynamic world. Here, we finally resolve this dilemma by performing the first ultrafast time-resolved transi...

Single molecules that exhibit narrow optical transitions at cryogenic temperatures can be used as local electric-field sensors. We derive the single charge sensitivity of aromatic organic dye molecules, based on first principles. Through numerical modeling, we demonstrate that by using currently available technologies it is possible to optically detect charging events in a granular network with a sensitivity better than $10^{-5}e/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ and track positions of mul...

We describe a method to probe the spectral fluctuations of a transition over broad ranges of frequencies and timescales with the high spectral resolution of Fourier spectroscopy, and a temporal resolution as high as the excited state lifetime, even in the limit of very low photocounting rates. The method derives from a simple relation between the fluorescence spectral dynamics of a single radiating dipole and its fluorescence intensity correlations at the outputs of a continu...

A molecular wire containing an emitting molecular center is controllably suspended between the plasmonic electrodes of a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope. Passing current through this circuit generates an ultra narrow-line emission at an energy of ? 1.5 eV which is assigned to the fluorescence of the molecular center. Control over the linewidth is obtained by progressively detaching the emitting unit from the surface. The recorded spectra also reveal several vibronic p...

We report the observation of ultralong coherence times in the purely electronic zero-phonon line emission of single terrylenediimide molecules at 1.4 K. Vibronic excitation and spectrally resolved detection with a scanning Fabry-Perot spectrum analyzer were used to measure a linewidth of 65 MHz. This is within a factor of 1.6 of the transform limit. It therefore indicates that single molecule emission may be suited for applications in linear optics quantum computation. Additi...

Nonlinear spectroscopy with quantum entangled photons is an emerging field of research that holds the promise to achieve a superior signal-to-noise ratio and effectively isolate many-body interactions. Photon sources used for this purpose however lack the frequency tunability and spectral bandwidth demanded by contemporary molecular materials. Here, we present design strategies for efficient spontaneous parametric downconversion to generate biphoton states with adequate spect...

We demonstrate strong coupling of single photons emitted by individual molecules at cryogenic and ambient conditions to individual nanoparticles. We provide images obtained both in transmission and reflection, where an efficiency greater than 55% was achieved in converting incident narrow-band photons to plasmon-polaritons (plasmons) of a silver nanoparticle. Our work paves the way to spectroscopy and microscopy of nano-objects with sub-shot noise beams of light and to trigge...

Efficient excitation of a single two-level system usually requires that the driving field is at the same frequency as the atomic transition. However, the scattered laser light in solid-state implementations can dominate over the single photons, imposing an outstanding challenge to perfect single-photon sources. Here, we propose a background-free method using a phase-locked dichromatic electromagnetic field with no spectral overlap with the optical transition for a coherent co...
