Meminductors and memcapacitors do not allow a Lagrangian formulation in the classical sense since these elements are nonconservative in nature and the associated energies are not state functions. To circumvent this problem, a different configuration space is considered that, instead of the usual loop charges, consist of time-integrated loop charges. As a result, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations provide a set of integrated Kirchhoff voltage laws in terms of the eleme...

We present a tutorial on the properties of the new ideal circuit element, a memristor. By definition, a memristor M relates the charge q and the magnetic flux $\phi$ in a circuit, and complements a resistor R, a capacitor C, and an inductor L as an ingredient of ideal electrical circuits. The properties of these three elements and their circuits are a part of the standard curricula. The existence of the memristor as the fourth ideal circuit element was predicted in 1971 based...

We present both an overview and a perspective of recent experimental advances and proposed new approaches to performing computation using memristors. A memristor is a 2-terminal passive component with a dynamic resistance depending on an internal parameter. We provide an brief historical introduction, as well as an overview over the physical mechanism that lead to memristive behavior. This review is meant to guide nonpractitioners in the field of memristive circuits and their...

Several abilities of biological systems, such as adaptation to natural environment, or of animals to learn patterns when appropriately trained, are features that are extremely useful, if emulated by electronic circuits, in applications ranging from robotics to solution of complex optimization problems, traffic control, etc. In this chapter, we discuss several examples of biologically-inspired circuits that take advantage of memory circuit elements, namely, electronic elements...

Memory circuit elements, namely memristive, memcapacitive and meminductive systems, are gaining considerable attention due to their ubiquity and use in diverse areas of science and technology. Their modeling within the most widely used environment, SPICE, is thus critical to make substantial progress in the design and analysis of complex circuits. Here, we present a collection of models of different memory circuit elements and provide a methodology for their accurate and reli...

Unconventional computing explores multi-scale platforms connecting molecular-scale devices into networks for the development of scalable neuromorphic architectures, often based on new materials and components with new functionalities. We review some work investigating the functionalities of locally connected networks of different types of switching elements as computational substrates. In particular, we discuss reservoir computing with networks of nonlinear nanoscale componen...

Networks with memristive devices are a potential basis for the next generation of computing devices. They are also an important model system for basic science, from modeling nanoscale conductivity to providing insight into the information-processing of neurons. The resistance in a memristive device depends on the history of the applied bias and thus displays a type of memory. The interplay of this memory with the dynamic properties of the network can give rise to new behavior...

This article presents a review on the main applications of the fourth fundamental circuit element, named "memristor", which had been proposed for the first time by Leon Chua and has recently been developed by a team at HP Laboratories led by Stanley Williams. In particular, after a brief analysis of memristor theory with a description of the first memristor, manufactured at HP Laboratories, we present its main applications in the circuit design and computer technology, togeth...

The prediction made by L. O. Chua 45+ years ago (see: IEEE Trans. Circuit Theory (1971) 18:507-519 and also: Proc. IEEE (2012) 100:1920-1927) about the existence of a passive circuit element (called memristor) that links the charge and flux variables has been confirmed by the HP lab group in its report (see: Nature (2008) 453:80-83) on a successful construction of such an element. This sparked an enormous interest in mem-elements, analysis of their unusual dynamical propertie...

In this article, we introduce a new nanoscale electromechanical device -- a leaky memcapacitor -- and show that it may be useful for the hardware implementation of spiking neurons. The leaky memcapacitor is a movable-plate capacitor that becomes quite conductive when the plates come close to each other. The equivalent circuit of the leaky memcapacitor involves a memcapacitive and memristive system connected in parallel. In the leaky memcapacitor, the resistance and capacitanc...
