We present a simple technique to compute moments of derivatives of unitary characteristic polynomials. The first part of the technique relies on an idea of Bump and Gamburd: it uses orthonormality of Schur functions over unitary groups to compute matrix averages of characteristic polynomials. In order to consider derivatives of those polynomials, we here need the added strength of the Generalized Binomial Theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski. This result is very natural as it provides coefficients for the Taylor expansions of Schur functions, in terms of shifted Schur functions. The answer is finally given as a sum over partitions of functions of the contents. One can also obtain alternative expressions involving hypergeometric functions of matrix arguments.

We investigate the joint moments of the 2k-th power of the characteristic polynomial of random unitary matrices with the 2h-th power of the derivative of this same polynomial. We prove that for a fixed h, the moments are given by rational functions of k, up to a well-known factor that already arises when h=0. We fully describe the denominator in those rational functions (this had already been done by Hughes experimentally), and define the numerators through various formulas, ...

We provide a combinatorial derivation of an asymptotic formula for averages of mixed ratios of characteristic polynomials over the unitary group, where mixed ratios are products of ratios and/or logarithmic derivatives. Our proof of this formula is a generalization of Bump and Gamburd's elegant combinatorial proof of Conrey, Forrester and Snaith's formula for averages of ratios of characteristic polynomials over the unitary group. One application of this formula is an asympto...

Denoting by $P_N(A,\theta)=\det(I-Ae^{-i\theta})$ the characteristic polynomial on the unit circle in the complex plane of an $N\times N$ random unitary matrix $A$, we calculate the $k$th moment, defined with respect to an average over $A\in U(N)$, of the random variable corresponding to the $2\beta$th moment of $P_N(A,\theta)$ with respect to the uniform measure $\frac{d\theta}{2\pi}$, for all $k, \beta\in\mathbb{N}$ . These moments of moments have played an important role i...

We examine the asymptotics of the moments of characteristic polynomials of $N\times N$ matrices drawn from the Hermitian ensembles of Random Matrix Theory, in the limit as $N\to\infty$. We focus in particular on the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, but discuss other Hermitian ensembles as well. We employ a novel approach to calculate asymptotic formulae for the moments, enabling us to uncover subtle structure not apparent in previous approaches.

Let $\Lambda_X(s)=\det(I-sX^{\dagger})$ be the characteristic polynomial of the unitary matrix $X$. It is believed that the distribution of values of $\Lambda_X(s)$ model the distribution of values of the Riemann zeta-function $\zeta(s)$. This principle motivates many avenues of study. Of particular interest is the behavior of $\Lambda_X'(s)$ and the distribution of its zeros (all of which lie inside or on the unit circle). In this article we present several identities for th...

The joint moments of the derivatives of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix, and also a variant of the characteristic polynomial that is real on the unit circle, in the large matrix size limit, have been studied intensively in the past twenty five years, partly in relation to conjectural connections to the Riemann zeta-function and Hardy's function. We completely settle the most general version of the problem of convergence of these joint moments, after t...

Since the seminal work of Keating and Snaith, the characteristic polynomial of a random Haar-distributed unitary matrix has seen several of its functional studied or turned into a conjecture; for instance: $ \bullet $ its value in $1$ (Keating-Snaith theorem), $ \bullet $ the truncation of its Fourier series up to any fraction of its degree, $ \bullet $ the computation of the relative volume of the Birkhoff polytope, $ \bullet $ its products and ratios taken in differ...

We investigate the joint moments of derivatives of characteristic polynomials over the unitary symplectic group $Sp(2N)$ and the orthogonal ensembles $SO(2N)$ and $O^-(2N)$. We prove asymptotic formulae for the joint moments of the $n_1$-th and $n_2$-th derivatives of the characteristic polynomials for all three matrix ensembles. Our results give two explicit formulae for each of the leading order coefficients, one in terms of determinants of hypergeometric functions and the ...

We calculate joint moments of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix from the circular unitary ensemble and its derivative in the case that the power in the moments is an odd positive integer. The calculations are carried out for finite matrix size and in the limit as the size of the matrices goes to infinity. The latter asymptotic calculation allows us to prove a long-standing conjecture from random matrix theory.

In this note we give a combinatorial and non-computational proof of the asymptotics of the integer moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of Haar distributed unitary matrices as the size of the matrix goes to infinity. This is achieved by relating these quantities to a lattice point count problem. Our main result is a new explicit expression for the leading order coefficient in the asymptotic as a volume of a certain region involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetl...
