In this paper we further develop the theory of geometric tropicalization due to Hacking, Keel and Tevelev and we describe tropical methods for implicitization of surfaces. More precisely, we enrich this theory with a combinatorial formula for tropical multiplicities of regular points in arbitrary dimension and we prove a conjecture of Sturmfels and Tevelev regarding sufficient combinatorial conditions to compute tropical varieties via geometric tropicalization. Using these two results, we extend previous work of Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for tropical implicitization of generic surfaces, and we provide methods for approaching the non-generic cases.

The paper consists of lecture notes for a mini-course given by the authors at the G\"okova Geometry \& Topology conference in May 2014. We start the exposition with tropical curves in the plane and their applications to problems in classical enumerative geometry, and continue with a look at more general tropical varieties and their homology theories.

Tropical algebraic geometry is an active new field of mathematics that establishes and studies some very general principles to translate algebro-geometric problems into purely combinatorial ones. This expository paper gives an introduction to these new techniques with a special emphasis on the recent applications to problems in enumerative geometry.

Tropical geometry is a piecewise linear "shadow" of algebraic geometry. It allows for the computation of several cohomological invariants of an algebraic variety. In particular, its application to enumerative algebraic geometry led to significant progress. In this survey, we give an introduction to tropical geometry techniques for algebraic curve counting problems. We also survey some recent developments, with a particular emphasis on the computation of the degree of the Se...

We give an introduction to Tropical Geometry and prove some results in Tropical Intersection Theory. The first part of this paper is an introduction to tropical geometry aimed at researchers in Algebraic Geometry from the point of view of degenerations of varieties using projective not-necessarily-normal toric varieties. The second part is a foundational account of tropical intersection theory with proofs of some new theorems relating it to classical intersection theory. Re...

Complex algebraic varieties become easy piecewise-linear objects after passing to the so-called tropical limit. Geometry of these limiting objects is known as tropical geometry. In this short survey we take a look at motivation and intuition behind this limit and consider a few simple examples of correspondence principle between classical and tropical geometries.

Tropical implicitization means computing the tropicalization of a unirational variety from its parametrization. In the case of a hypersurface, this amounts to finding the Newton polytope of the implicit equation, without computing its coefficients. We present a new implementation of this procedure in Oscar.jl. It solves challenging instances, and can be used for classical implicitization as well. We also develop implicitization in higher codimension via Chow forms, and we pos...

Given a projective variety $X$ of codimension $k+1$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ the Chow hypersurface $Z_X$ is the hypersurface of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(k, n)$ parametrizing projective linear spaces that intersect $X$. We introduce the tropical Chow hypersurface $\operatorname{Trop}(Z_X)$. This object only depends on the tropical variety $\operatorname{Trop}(X)$ and we provide an explicit way to obtain $\operatorname{Trop}(Z_X)$ from $\operatorname{Trop}(X)$. We also give...

The software TrIm offers implementations of tropical implicitization and tropical elimination, as developed by Tevelev and the authors. Given a polynomial map with generic coefficients, TrIm computes the tropical variety of the image. When the image is a hypersurface, the output is the Newton polytope of the defining polynomial. TrIm can thus be used to compute mixed fiber polytopes, including secondary polytopes.

We address the description of the tropicalization of families of rational varieties under parametrizations with prescribed support, via curve valuations. We recover and extend results by Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for generic coefficients, considering rational parametrizations with non-trivial denominator. The advantage of our point of view is that it can be generalized to deal with non-generic parametrizations. We provide a detailed analysis of the degree of the closed image,...
