Let $M(x)=\sum_{1\le n\le x}\mu(n)$ where $\mu$ is the M\"obius function. It is well-known that the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to the assertion that $M(x)=O(x^{1/2+\epsilon})$ for all $\epsilon>0$. There has been much interest and progress in further bounding $M(x)$ under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis. In 2009, Soundararajan established the current best bound of \[ M(x)\ll\sqrt{x}\exp\left((\log x)^{1/2}(\log\log x)^c\right) \] (setting $c$ to $14$, though th...

We prove new mean value theorems for primes in arithmetic progressions to moduli larger than $x^{1/2}$. Our main result shows that the primes are equidistributed for a fixed residue class over all moduli of size $x^{1/2+\delta}$ with a 'convenient sized' factor. As a consequence, the expected asymptotic holds for all but $O(\delta Q)$ moduli $q\sim Q=x^{1/2+\delta}$ and we get results for moduli as large as $x^{11/21}$. Our proof extends previous techniques of Bombieri, Fou...

Let $k \geq 2$ and $N$ be positive integers and let $\chi$ be a Dirichlet character modulo $N$. Let $f(z)$ be a modular form in $M_k(\Gamma_0(N),\chi)$. Then we have a unique decomposition $f(z)=E_f(z)+S_f(z)$, where $E_f(z) \in E_k(\Gamma_0(N),\chi)$ and $S_f(z) \in S_k(\Gamma_0(N),\chi)$. In this paper we give an explicit formula for $E_f(z)$ in terms of Eisenstein series. Then we apply our result to certain families of eta quotients and to representations of positive integ...

This is the first of two coupled papers estimating the mean values of multiplicative functions, of unknown support, on arithmetic progressions with large differences. Applications are made to the study of primes in arithmetic progression and to the Fourier coefficients of automorphic cusp forms.

We give a short and "soft" proof of the asymptotic orthogonality of Fourier coefficients of Poincar\'e series for classical modular forms as well as for Siegel cusp forms, in a qualitative form.

Kannan Soundararajan recently obtained a new estimate, conditional to the Riemann hypothesis, for the summatory function of the Mobius function. In this expository article we describe his method, with detailed computations.

We consider some questions related to the signs of Hecke eigenvalues or Fourier coefficients of classical modular forms. One problem is to determine to what extent those signs, for suitable sets of primes, determine uniquely the modular form, and we give both individual and statistical results. The second problem, which has been considered by a number of authors, is to determine the size, in terms of the conductor and weight, of the first sign-change of Hecke eigenvalues. Her...

We study the variance of sums of the $k$-fold divisor function $d_k(n)$ over sparse arithmetic progressions, with averaging over both residue classes and moduli. In a restricted range, we confirm an averaged version of a recent conjecture about the asymptotics of this variance. This result is closely related to moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions and our proof relies on the asymptotic large sieve.

To study statistical properties of modular forms, including for instance Sato-Tate like problems, it is essential to have a large number of Fourier coefficients. In this article, we exhibit three bases for the space of modular forms of any half-integral weight and level 4, which have the property that many coefficients can be computed (relatively) quickly on a computer.

Let $f=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a(n)q^{n}\in S_{k+1/2}(N,\chi_{0})$ be a non-zero cuspidal Hecke eigenform of weight $k+\frac{1}{2}$ and the trivial nebentypus $\chi_{0}$ where the Fourier coefficients $a(n)$ are real. Bruinier and Kohnen conjectured that the signs of $a(n)$ are equidistributed. This conjecture was proved to be true by Inam, Wiese and Arias-de-Reyna for the subfamilies $\{a(t n^{2})\}_{n}$ where $t$ is a squarefree integer such that $a(t)\neq 0$. Let $q$ and $d$ be...
