We construct 3d, N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories by considering a one-parameter `R-flow' of 4d, N=2 theories, where the central charges vary while preserving their phase order. Each BPS state in 4d leads to a BPS particle in 3d, and thus each chamber of the 4d theory leads to a distinct 3d theory. Pairs of 4d chambers related by wall-crossing, R-flow to mirror pairs of 3d theories. In particular, the 2-3 wall-crossing for the A_2 Argyres-Douglas theory leads to 3d mirror sy...

We present explicit methods for computing the discriminant curves and the associated Kodaira type fiber degeneracies of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. These methods are applied to a specific three-family, SU(5) grand unified theory of particle physics within the context of Heterotic M-Theory. It is demonstrated that there is always a region of moduli space where a bulk space five-brane is wrapped on a pure fiber in the Calabi-Yau threefold. Restricting the discus...

Two pictures of BPS bound states in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory exist, one as a set of particles at equilibrium separations from each other, the other as a fusion of D-branes at a single point of space. We show how quiver quantum mechanics smoothly interpolates between the two, and use this, together with recent mathematical results on the cohomology of quiver varieties, to solve some nontrivial ground state counting problems in multi-particle quantu...

The BPS state spectrum in four-dimensional gauge theories or string vacua with N=2 supersymmetries is well known to depend on the values of the parameters or moduli at spatial infinity. The BPS index is locally constant, but discontinuous across real codimension-one walls where some of the BPS states decay. By postulating that BPS states are bound states of more elementary constituents carrying their own degrees of freedom and interacting via supersymmetric quantum mechanics,...

It is possible to understand whether a given BPS spectrum is generated by a relevant deformation of a 4D N=2 SCFT or of an asymptotically free theory from the periodicity properties of the corresponding quantum monodromy. With the aim of giving a better understanding of the above conjecture, in this paper we revisit the description of framed BPS states of four-dimensional relativistic quantum field theories with eight conserved supercharges in terms of supersymmetric quantum ...

We study the BPS spectrum of supersymmetric 5 dimensional field theories and their representations as string webs. It is found that a state of given charges exists when it has a representation as an irreducible string web. Its spin is determined by the string web. The number of fermionic zero modes is 8g+4b, where g is the number of internal faces and b is the number of boundaries. In the lift to M theory of 4d field theories such states are described by membranes ending on t...

After an introduction to N=2 susy Yang-Mills theories, I review in some detail, for the SU(2) gauge group, how the low-energy effective action is obtained using duality and the constraints arising from the supersymmetry. Then I discuss how knowledge of this action, duality and certain discrete symmetries allow us to determine the spectra of stable BPS states at any point in moduli space. This is done for gauge group SU(2), without and with fundamental matter hypermultiplets w...

We review the connection of $Y$- and $Q$-systems with the BPS spectra of $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QFTs. For each finite BPS chamber of a $\mathcal{N}=2$ model which is UV superconformal, one gets a periodic $Y$-system, while for each finite BPS chamber of an asymptotically-free $\mathcal{N}=2$ QFT one gets a $Q$-system i.e. a rational recursion all whose solutions satisfy a linear recursion with constant coefficients (depending on the initial conditions). For insta...

We study N=(2,2) supersymmetric abelian gauge theories in two dimensions. The exact BPS spectrum of these models is shown to coincide with the spectrum of massive hypermultiplets of certain N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. A special case of these results involves a surprising connection between four-dimensional N=2 SQCD with N colours and N_{f}>N flavours at the root of the baryonic Higgs branch and the supersymmetric CP^{2N-N_{f}-1} sigma-model in two di...

In this paper we set out to further explore the connection between isolated N=2 SCFT's in four dimensions and N=1 SCFT's in five dimensions. Using 5-brane webs we are able to provide IR Lagrangian descriptions in terms of 5d gauge theories for several classes of theories including the so-called TN theories. In many of these we find multiple dual gauge theory descriptions. The connection to 4d theories is then used to lift 4d N=2 S-dualities that involve weakly-gauging isolate...
