I review my work together with Piljin Yi on the spectrum of BPS-saturated states in N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. In an M-theory description, such states are realized as certain two-brane configurations. We first show how the central charge of the N = 2 algebra arises from the two-form central charge of the eleven-dimensional supersymmetry algebra, and derive the condition for a two-brane configuration to be BPS-saturated. We then discuss how the topology of the t...

Quivers, gauge theories and singular geometries are of great interest in both mathematics and physics. In this note, we collect a few open questions which have arisen in various recent works at the intersection between gauge theories, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. The questions originate from the study of supersymmetric gauge theories in different dimensions with different supersymmetries. Although these constitute merely the tip of a vast iceberg, we hope th...

In an earlier paper we gave the complete group-theoretical classification of BPS states of the N-extended D=4 conformal superalgebras su(2,2/N), but not all interesting cases were given in detail. In the present paper we spell out the interesting case of (1/N)-BPS and possibly protected states.

We consider the spectrum of BPS saturated states in $N = 2$ gauge theories in four dimensions. This spectrum may be discontinuous across real codimension one submanifolds of marginal stability in the moduli space of vacua. An example, which can be treated with semiclassical methods in the weak coupling limit, is the decay of quark-soliton bound states. For a quark and a soliton of electric-magnetic charge vectors $Q$ and $Q^\prime$ respectively, we find that as the manifold o...

BPS states of N=2, D=4 Super Yang-Mills theories with ADE flavor symmetry arise as junctions joining a D3-brane to a set of 7-branes defining the enhanced flavor algebra. We show that the familiar BPS spectrum of SU(2) theories with N_f <= 4 is simply given by the set of junctions whose self-intersection is bounded below as required by supersymmetry. This constraint, together with the relations between junction and weight lattices, is used to establish the appearance of arbit...

We study the correspondence between AdS$_3$ massive IIA supergravity vacua and two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ quiver quantum field theories. After categorizing all kinds of gravity solutions, we demystify the ones that seem to reflect anomalous gauge theories. In particular, we prove that there are bound states of D-branes on the boundary of the space which provide the dual quiver theory with exactly the correct amount of flavor symmetry in order to cancel its gauge anom...

It is possible to understand whether a given BPS spectrum is generated by a relevant deformation of a 4D N=2 SCFT or of an asymptotically free theory from the periodicity properties of the corresponding quantum monodromy. With the aim of giving a better understanding of the above conjecture, in this paper we revisit the description of framed BPS states of four-dimensional relativistic quantum field theories with eight conserved supercharges in terms of supersymmetric quantum ...

A large class of N=2 quantum field theories admits a BPS quiver description and the study of their BPS spectra is then reduced to a representation theory problem. In such theories the coupling to a line defect can be modelled by framed quivers. The associated spectral problem characterises the line defect completely. Framed BPS states can be thought of as BPS particles bound to the defect. We identify the framed BPS degeneracies with certain enumerative invariants associated ...

Quantum field theory $L_1$ on spacetime $X_{1}$ can be coupled to another quantum field theory $L_2$ on a spacetime $X_{2}$ via the third quantum field theory $L_{12}$ living on $X_{12} = X_{1} \cap X_{2}$. We explore several such constructions with two and four dimensional $X_{1}, X_{2}$'s and zero and two dimensional $X_{12}$'s, in the context of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations, and BPS/CFT correspondence. The companion paper will s...

We study the BPS spectrum in $D=4, N=4$ heterotic string compactifications, with some emphasis on intermediate $N=4$ BPS states. These intermediate states, which can become short in $N=2$ compactifications, are crucial for establishing an $S-T$ exchange symmetry in $N=2$ compactifications. We discuss the implications of a possible $S-T$ exchange symmetry for the $N=2$ BPS spectrum. Then we present the exact result for the 1-loop corrections to gravitational couplings in one o...
