A "2-group" is a category equipped with a multiplication satisfying laws like those of a group. Just as groups have representations on vector spaces, 2-groups have representations on "2-vector spaces", which are categories analogous to vector spaces. Unfortunately, Lie 2-groups typically have few representations on the finite-dimensional 2-vector spaces introduced by Kapranov and Voevodsky. For this reason, Crane, Sheppeard and Yetter introduced certain infinite-dimensional 2...

We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of Gelfand pairs of the form $G_n = N_n\rtimes K_n$ with $N_n$ nilpotent, in other words pairs $(G_n,K_n)$ for which $G_n/K_n$ is a commutative nilmanifold. First, we extend the criterion of \cite{W3} for a direct limit representation to be multiplicity free. Then we study direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of commutative nilmanifolds and look to see when the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on an appro...

In this paper we revisit the theory of induced representations in the setting of locally compact quantum groups. In the case of induction from open quantum subgroups, we show that constructions of Kustermans and Vaes are equivalent to the classical, and much simpler, construction of Rieffel. We also prove in general setting the continuity of induction in the sense of Vaes with respect to weak containment.

Let $X$ be a Banach space on which a discrete group $\Gamma$ acts by isometries. For certain natural choices of $X$, every element of the group algebra, when regarded as an operator on $X$, has empty residual spectrum. We show, for instance, that this occurs if $X$ is $\ell^2(\Gm)$ or the group von Neumann algebra $VN(\Gm)$. In our approach, we introduce the notion of a {\em surjunctive pair}, and develop some of the basic properties of this construction. The cases $X=\ell^...

This is an expository book on unitary representations of topological groups, and of several dual spaces, which are spaces of such representations up to some equivalence. The most important notions are defined for topological groups, but a special attention is paid to the case of discrete groups. The unitary dual of a group $G$ is the space of equivalence classes of its irreducible unitary representations; it is both a topological space and a Borel space. The primitive dual ...

In this note we describe the recent progress in the classification of bounded and semibounded representations of infinite dimensional Lie groups. We start with a discussion of the semiboundedness condition and how the new concept of a smoothing operator can be used to construct $C^*$-algebras (so called host algebras) whose representations are in one-to-one correspondence with certain semibounded representations of an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$. This makes the full ...

Let $(\pi, \mathcal H)$ be a continuous unitary representation of the (infinite dimensional) Lie group $G$ and $\gamma \: \mathbb R \to \mathrm{Aut}(G)$ define a continuous action of $\mathbb R$ on $G$. Suppose that $\pi^\#(g,t) = \pi(g) U_t$ defines a continuous unitary representation of the semidirect product group $G \rtimes_\gamma \mathbb R$. The first main theorem of the present note provides criteria for the invariance of the space $\mathcal H^\infty$ of smooth vectors ...

A Coxeter group admits infinite dimensional irreducible complex representations if and only if it is not finite and affine. In this paper we give a construction of such representations for certain Coxeter groups using some topological information of the corresponding Coxeter graphs.

Given a finite group $G$ and a subgroup $K$, we study the commutant of $\text{Ind}_K^G\theta$, where $\theta$ is an irreducible $K$-representation. After a careful analysis of Frobenius reciprocity, we are able to introduce an orthogonal basis in such commutant and an associated Fourier transform. Then we translate our results in the corresponding Hecke algebra, an isomorphic algebra in the group algebra of $G$. Again a complete Fourier analysis is developed and, as particula...

Let $\mathbb F$ be a finite field. Consider a direct sum $V$ of an infinite number of copies of $\mathbb F$, consider the dual space $V^\diamond$, i.~e., the direct product of an infinite number of copies of $\mathbb F$. Consider the direct sum ${\mathbb V}=V\oplus V^\diamond$. The object of the paper is the group $\mathbf{GL}$ of continuous linear operators in $\mathbb V$. We reduce the theory of unitary representations of $\mathbf{GL}$ to projective representations of a cer...
