Let $p$ be a fixed prime. We estimate the number of elements of a set $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}^*_p$ for which $$ s_1s_2 \equiv a \pmod{p} \quad \mbox{for some}\quad a \in [-X,X] \quad \mbox{for all}\quad s_1,s_2 \in A. $$ We also consider variations and generalizations.

We show that if $A$ is a subset of a group of prime order $p$ such that $|2A|<2.7652|A|$ and $|A|<1.25\cdot10^{-6}p$, then $A$ is contained in an arithmetic progression with at most $|2A|-|A|+1$ terms, and $2A$ contains an arithmetic progression with the same difference and at least $2|A|-1$ terms. This improves a number of previously known results.

Let p > 4 be a prime. We show that the largest subset of F_p^n with no 4-term arithmetic progressions has cardinality << N(log N)^{-c}, where c = 2^{-22} and N := p^n. A result of this type was claimed in a previous paper by the authors and published in Proc. London Math. Society. Unfortunately the proof had a gap, and we issue an erratum for that paper here. Our new argument is different and significantly shorter. In fact we prove a stronger result, which can be viewed as a ...

For an odd prime $p$, we say $f(X) \in {\mathbb F}_p[X]$ computes square roots in $\mathbb F_p$ if, for all nonzero perfect squares $a \in \mathbb F_p$, we have $f(a)^2 = a$. When $p \equiv 3 \mod 4$, it is well known that $f(X) = X^{(p+1)/4}$ computes square roots. This degree is surprisingly low (and in fact lowest possible), since we have specified $(p-1)/2$ evaluations (up to sign) of the polynomial $f(X)$. On the other hand, for $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$ there was previously...

Let $p$ a large enough prime number. When $A$ is a subset of $\mathbb{F}_p\smallsetminus\{0\}$ of cardinality $|A|> (p+1)/3$, then an application of Cauchy-Davenport Theorem gives $\mathbb{F}_p\smallsetminus\{0\}\subset A(A+A)$. In this note, we improve on this and we show that if $|A|\ge 0.3051 p$ implies $A(A+A)\supseteq\mathbb{F}_p\smallsetminus\{0\}$. In the opposite direction we show that there exists a set $A$ such that $|A| > (1/8+o(1))p$ and $\mathbb{F}_p\smallsetminu...

We study the Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension of the set of quadratic residues (i.e. squares) in finite fields, $\mathbb F_q$, when considered as a subset of the additive group. We conjecture that as $q \to \infty$, the squares have the maximum possible VC-dimension, viz. $(1+o(1))\log_2 q$. We prove, using the Weil bound for multiplicative character sums, that the VC-dimension is $\geq (\frac{1}{2} + o(1))\log_2 q$. We also provide numerical evidence for our conjectures. T...

This paper is continuation of the paper "Primitive roots in quadratic field". We consider an analogue of Artin's primitive root conjecture for algebraic numbers which is not a unit in real quadratic fields. Given such an algebraic number, for a rational prime $p$ which is inert in the field the maximal order of the unit modulo $p$ is $p^2-1$. An extension of Artin's conjecture is that there are infinitely many such inert primes for which this order is maximal. we show that fo...

We consider a family, $\mathcal{F}$, of subsets of an $n$-set such that the cardinality of the symmetric difference of any two elements $F,F'\in\mathcal{F}$ is not a multiple of 4. We prove that the maximal size of $\mathcal{F}$ is bounded by $2n$, unless $n\equiv{}3\mod4$ when it is bounded by $2n+2$. Our method uses cubic forms on $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ and the Hurwitz-Radon theory of square identities. We also apply this theory to obtain some information about boolean cubic form...

We prove that any prime $p$ satisfying $\phi(p-1)\leq (p-1)/4$ contains two consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo $p$ neither of which is a primitive root modulo $p$.
