Complete intersections inside rational homogeneous varieties provide interesting examples of Fano manifolds. For example, if $X = \cap_{i=1}^r D_i \subset G/P$ is a general complete intersection of $r$ ample divisors such that $K_{G/P}^* \otimes \mathcal{O}_{G/P}(-\sum_i D_i)$ is ample, then $X$ is Fano. We first classify these Fano complete intersections which are locally rigid. It turns out that most of them are hyperplane sections. We then classify general hyperplane secti...

The ring of conditions defined by C. De Concini and C. Procesi is an intersection theory for algebraic cycles in a spherical homogeneous space. In the paper we consider the ring of conditions for the group $(C^*)^n$. Up to a big extend this ring can be reduced to the cohomology rings of smooth projective toric varieties. This ring also can be described using tropical geometry. We recall these known results and provide a new description of this ring in terms of convex integral...

A complete intersection $f_1=\cdots=f_k=0$ is sch\"on, if $f_1=\cdots=f_j=0$ defines a sch\"on subvariety of an algebraic torus for every $j\leqslant k$. This class includes nondegenerate complete intersections, critical loci of their coordinate projections, other simplest Thom--Boardman and multiple point strata of such projections, generalized Calabi--Yau complete intersections, equaltions of polynomial optimization, hyperplane arrangement complements, and many other intere...

The Hodge algebra structures on the homogeneous coordinate rings of Grassmann varieties provide semi-toric degenerations of these varieties. In this paper we construct these semi-toric degenerations using quasi-valuations and triangulations of Newton-Okounkov bodies.

We reprove and generalize the result that the intersection cohomology groups of a toric variety with coefficient in a nontrivial rank one local system vanish. We prove a similar vanishing result for a certain class of varieties on which a connected linear solvable group acts, including all spherical varieties.

In this paper we prove a new generic vanishing theorem for $X$ a complete homogeneous variety with respect to an action of a connected algebraic group. Let $A, B_0\subset X$ be locally closed affine subvarieties, and assume that $B_0$ is smooth and pure dimensional. Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a perverse sheaf on $A$ and let $B=g B_0$ be a generic translate of $B_0$. Then our theorem implies $(-1)^{\operatorname{codim} B}\chi(A\cap B, \mathcal{P}|_{A\cap B})\geq 0$. As an applicatio...

This is a survey paper about a selection of results in complex algebraic geometry that appeared in the recent and less recent litterature, and in which rational homogeneous spaces play a prominent r{\^o}le. This selection is largely arbitrary and mainly reflects the interests of the author.

We study the arithmetic of complete intersections in projective space over number fields. Our main results include arithmetic Torelli theorems and versions of the Shafarevich conjecture, as proved for curves and abelian varieties by Faltings. For example, we prove an analogue of the Shafarevich conjecture for cubic and quartic threefolds and intersections of two quadrics.

The rational Chow ring A?(S[n],Q) of the Hilbert scheme S[n] parametrising the length n zero-dimensional subschemes of a toric surface S can be described with the help of equivariant techniques. In this paper, we explain the general method and we illustrate it through many examples. In the last section, we present results on the intersection theory of graded Hilbert schemes.

Let K(X) be the collection of all non-zero finite dimensional subspaces of rational functions on an n-dimensional irreducible variety X. For any n-tuple L_1,..., L_n in K(X), we define an intersection index [L_1,..., L_n] as the number of solutions in X of a system of equations f_1 = ... = f_n = 0 where each f_i is a generic function from the space L_i. In counting the solutions, we neglect the solutions x at which all the functions in some space L_i vanish as well as the sol...
