The SU($N$) principal chiral model is asymptotically free and integrable in $1+1$ dimensions. In the large-$N$ limit, there is no scattering, but correlation functions are {\em not} those of a free field theory. We briefly review the derivation of form factors for local operators. Two-point functions for such operators are known exactly. The two-point function of scaling-field operators has the short-distance behavior expected from the renormalization group. We briefly discus...

It is established by numerical means that the continuum large N principal chiral model in two dimensions has a phase transition in a smoothed two point function at a critical distance of the order of the correlation length.

Analytical and numerical methods are applied to principal chiral models on a two-dimensional lattice and their predictions are tested and compared. New techniques for the strong coupling expansion of SU(N) models are developed and applied to the evaluation of the two-point correlation function. The momentum-space lattice propagator is constructed with precision O(\beta^{10}) and an evaluation of the correlation length is obtained for several different definitions. Three-loop ...

We compute the first four perturbative coefficients of the internal energy for the twisted reduced principal chiral model (TRPCM) using numerical stochastic perturbation theory (NSPT). This matrix model has the same large $N$ limit as the ordinary principal chiral model (PCM) at infinite volume. Indeed, we verify that the first three coefficients match the analytic result for the PCM coefficients at large $N$ with a precision of three to four significant digits. The fourth co...

We apply the tensor renormalization group method to the (1+1)-dimensional SU(2) principal chiral model at finite chemical potential with the use of the Gauss-Legendre quadrature to discretize the SU(2) Lie group. The internal energy at vanishing chemical potential $\mu=0$ shows good consistency with the prediction of the strong and weak coupling expansions. This indicates an effectiveness of the Gauss-Legendre quadrature for the partitioning of the SU(2) Lie group. In the fin...

In this paper, we consider the 1+1 dimensional vector valued Principal Chiral Field model (PCF) obtained as a simplification of the Vacuum Einstein Field equations under the Belinski-Zakharov symmetry. PCF is an integrable model, but a rigorous description of its evolution is far from complete. Here we provide the existence of local solutions in a suitable chosen energy space, as well as small global smooth solutions under a certain non degeneracy condition. We also construct...

The properties of (N X N)-matrix-valued-field theories, in the limit N goes to infinity, are harder to obtain than those for isovector-valued field theories. This is because we know less about the sum of planar diagrams than the sum of bubble/linear diagrams. Combining the 1/N-expansion with the axioms for form factors, exact form factors can be found for the integrable field theory of an SU(N)-valued field in 1+1 dimensions. These form factors can be used to find the vacuum ...

A systematic method to calculate the low energy spectrum of SU(2) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with high precision is given and applied to obtain the energies of the groundstate and the first few excited states.

We extend our previous analysis to arbitrary two dimensional SU(N) principal chiral model in a link formulation. A general expression for the second order coefficient of fixed distance correlation function is given in terms of Green functions. This coefficient is calculated for distance 1 and is proven to be path independent. We also study the weak coupling expansion of the free energy of one dimensional SU(N) model and explain why it is non-uniform in the volume. Further, we...

We continue our investigation of correlation functions of the large-N (planar) limit of the (1+1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma model, whose bare field U(x) lies in the fundamental matrix representation of SU(N). We find all the form factors of the renormalized field. An exact formula for Wightman and time-ordered correlation functions is found.
