Very recently Girardeau and Minguzzi [arXiv:0807.3366v2, Phys. Rev. A 79, 033610 (2009)] have studied an impurity in a one-dimensional gas of hard-core bosons. In particular they deal with the general case where the mass of the impurity is different from the mass of the bosons and the impurity-boson interaction is not necessarily infinitely repulsive. We show that one of their initial step is erroneous, contradicting both physical intuition and known exact results. Their resu...

We show that a distinguishable mobile impurity inside a one-dimensional many-body state at zero temperature generally does not behave like a quasiparticle (QP). Instead, both the impurities dynamics as well as the ground state of the bath are fundamentally transformed by a diverging number of zero-energy excitations being generated, leading to what we call infrared-dominated (ID) dynamics. Combining analytics and DMRG numerics we provide a general formula for the power law go...

The one-dimensional problem of $N$ particles with contact interaction in the presence of a tunable transmitting and reflecting impurity is investigated along the lines of the coordinate Bethe ansatz. As a result, the system is shown to be exactly solvable by determining the eigenfunctions and the energy spectrum. The latter is given by the solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations which we establish for different boundary conditions in the presence of the impurity. These impuri...

We have analyzed the behavior of a mobile quantum impurity in a bath formed by a two-leg bosonic ladder by a combination of field theory (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid) and numerical (Density Matrix Renormalization Group) techniques. Computing the Green's function of the impurity as a function of time at different momenta, we find a power law decay at zero momentum, which signals the breakdown of any quasi-particle description of the impurity motion. We compute the exponent both ...

These notes cover in some detail lectures I gave at the Les Houches Summer School 2012. I describe here work done with Deepak Iyer with important contributions from Hujie Guan. I discuss some aspects of the physics revealed by quantum quenches and present a formalism for studying the quench dynamics of integrable systems. The formalism presented generalizes an approach by Yudson and is applied to Lieb-Liniger model which describes a gas of $N$ interacting bosons moving on the...

We extend a recently proposed non-local version of Coleman's equivalence between the Thirring and sine-Gordon models to the case in which the original fermion fields interact with fixed impurities. We explain how our results can be used in the context of one-dimensional strongly correlated systems (the so called Tomonaga-Luttinger model) to study the dependence of the charge-density oscillations on the range of the fermionic interactions.

We study the integrable model of one-dimensional bosons with contact repulsion. In the limit of weak interaction, we use the microscopic hydrodynamic theory to obtain the excitation spectrum. The statistics of quasiparticles changes with the increase of momentum. At lowest momenta good quasiparticles are fermions, while at higher momenta they are Bogoliubov bosons, in accordance with recent studies. In the limit of strong interaction, we analyze the exact solution and find ex...

We present a comprehensive review on the state-of-the-art of the approximate analytic approaches describing the finite-temperature thermodynamic quantities of the Lieb-Liniger model of the one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas with contact repulsive interactions. This paradigmatic model of quantum many-body-theory plays an important role in many areas of physics -- thanks to its integrability and possible experimental realization using, e.g., ensembles of ultracold bosonic atoms conf...

We scrutinize the hydrodynamic approach for calculating dynamical correlations in one-dimensional superfluids near integrability and calculate the characteristic time scale {\tau} beyond which this approach is valid. For time scales shorter than {\tau} hydrodynamics fails and we develop an approach based on kinetics of fermionic quasiparticles described as mobile impurities. New universal results for the dynamical structure factor relevant to experiments in ultracold atomic g...

We study the quench dynamics of one dimensional bosons or fermion quantum gases with either attractive or repulsive contact interactions. Such systems are well described by the Gaudin-Yang model which turns out to be quantum integrable. We use a contour integral approach, the Yudson approach, to expand initial states in terms of Bethe Ansatz eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. Making use of the contour, we obtain a complete set of eigenstates, including both free states and bound...
