Matrix mutation appears in the definition of cluster algebras of Fomin and Zelevinsky. We give a representation theoretic interpretation of matrix mutation, using tilting theory in cluster categories of hereditary algebras. Using this, we obtain a representation theoretical interpretation of cluster mutation in case of acyclic cluster algebras of finite type.

Cluster algebras were introduced by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky in connection with dual canonical bases. To a cluster algebra of simply laced Dynkin type one can associate the cluster category. Any cluster of the cluster algebra corresponds to a tilting object in the cluster category. The cluster tilted algebra is the algebra of endomorphisms of that tilting object. Viewing the cluster tilted algebra as a path algebra of a quiver with relations, we prove in this paper that the...

One of the remarkable properties of cluster algebras is that any cluster, obtained from a sequence of mutations from an initial cluster, can be written as a Laurent polynomial in the initial cluster (known as the "Laurent phenomenon"). There are many nonlinear recurrences which exhibit the Laurent phenomenon and thus unexpectedly generate integer sequences. The mutation of a typical quiver will not generate a recurrence, but rather an erratic sequence of exchange relations. H...

We develop a version of cluster algebra extending the ring of Laurent polynomials by adding Grassmann variables. These algebras can be described in terms of `extended quivers' which are oriented hypergraphs. We describe mutations of such objects and define a corresponding commutative superalgebra. Our construction includes the notion of weighted quivers that has already appeared in different contexts. This paper is a step of understanding the notion of cluster superalgebra

An important problem in the theory of cluster algebras is to compute the fundamental group of the exchange graph. A non-trivial closed loop in the exchange graph, for example, generates a non-trivial identity for the classical and quantum dilogarithm functions. An interesting conjecture, partly motivated by dilogarithm functions, is that this fundamental group is generated by closed loops of mutations involving only two of the cluster variables. We present examples and counte...

In 2003, Fomin and Zelevinsky obtained Cartan-Killing type classification of all cluster algebras of finite type, i.e. cluster algebras having only finitely many distinct cluster variables. A wider class of cluster algebras is formed by cluster algebras of finite mutation type which have finitely many exchange matrices (but are allowed to have infinitely many cluster variables). In this paper we classify all cluster algebras of finite mutation type with skew-symmetric exchang...

This is an introductory survey on cluster algebras and their (additive) categorification using derived categories of Ginzburg algebras. After a gentle introduction to cluster combinatorics, we review important examples of coordinate rings admitting a cluster algebra structure. We then present the general definition of a cluster algebra and describe the interplay between cluster variables, coefficients, c-vectors and g-vectors. We show how c-vectors appear in the study of quan...

Let $\Delta$ be an oriented valued graph equipped with a group of admissible automorphisms satisfying a certain stability condition. We prove that the (coefficient-free) cluster algebra $\mathcal A(\Delta/G)$ associated to the valued quotient graph $\Delta/G$ is a subalgebra of the quotient $\pi(\mathcal A(\Delta))$ of the cluster algebra associated to $\Delta$ by the action of $G$. When $\Delta$ is a Dynkin diagram, we prove that $\mathcal A(\Delta/G)$ and $\pi(\mathcal A(\D...

This is an expanded version of the notes of our lectures given at the conference "Current Developments in Mathematics 2003" held at Harvard University on November 21--22, 2003. We present an overview of the main definitions, results and applications of the theory of cluster algebras.
