Given a closed subvariety of an algebraic torus, the associated tropical variety is a polyhedral fan in the space of 1-parameter subgroups of the torus which describes the behaviour of the subvariety at infinity. We show that the link of the origin has only top rational homology if a genericity condition is satisfied. Our result is obtained using work of Tevelev and Deligne's theory of mixed Hodge structures.

We introduce and study a special class of ideals, called tropical ideals, in the semiring of tropical polynomials, with the goal of developing a useful and solid algebraic foundation for tropical geometry. The class of tropical ideals strictly includes the tropicalizations of classical ideals, and allows us to define subschemes of tropical toric varieties, generalizing [Giansiracusa-Giansiracusa]. We investigate some of the basic structure of tropical ideals, and show that th...

The paper consists of lecture notes for a mini-course given by the authors at the G\"okova Geometry \& Topology conference in May 2014. We start the exposition with tropical curves in the plane and their applications to problems in classical enumerative geometry, and continue with a look at more general tropical varieties and their homology theories.

The Welschinger invariants of real rational algebraic surfaces are natural analogues of the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We establish a tropical formula to calculate the Welschinger invariants of real toric Del Pezzo surfaces for any conjugation-invariant configuration of points. The formula expresses the Welschinger invariants via the total multiplicity of certain tropical curves (non-Archimedean amoebas) passing through generic configurations of points, and then via...

We extend the tropical intersection theory to tropicalizations of germs of analytic sets. In particular, we construct a (not entirely obvious) local version of the ring of tropical fans with a nondegenerate intersection pairing. As an application, we study nearby monodromy eigenvalues -- the eigenvalues of the monodromy operators of singularities, adjacent to a given singularity of a holomorphic function $f$. More precisely, we express some of such values in terms of certai...

We introduce a scheme-theoretic enrichment of the principal objects of tropical geometry. Using a category of semiring schemes, we construct tropical hypersurfaces as schemes over idempotent semirings such as $\mathbb{T} = (\mathbb{R}\cup \{-\infty\}, \mathrm{max}, +)$ by realizing them as solution sets to explicit systems of tropical equations that are uniquely determined by idempotent module theory. We then define a tropicalization functor that sends closed subschemes of a ...

We show that the counting of rational curves on a complete toric variety that are in general position to the toric prime divisors coincides with the counting of certain tropical curves. The proof is algebraic-geometric and relies on degeneration techniques and log deformation theory. This generalizes results of Mikhalkin obtained by different methods in the surface case to arbitrary dimensions.

In this paper, we consider weighted counts of tropical plane curves of particular combinatorial type through a certain number of generic points. We give a criterion, derived from tropical intersection theory on the secondary fan, for a weighted count to give a number invariant of the position of the points. By computing a certain intersection multiplicity, we show how Mikhalkin's approach to computing Gromov-Witten invariants fits into our approach. This begins to address a q...

We give a tropical description of the counting of real log curves in toric degenerations of toric varieties. We treat the case of genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. The proof relies on log deformation theory and is a real version of the Nishinou-Siebert approach to the tropical correspondence theorem for complex curves. In dimension two, we use similar techniques to study the counting of real log curves with Welschinger signs and we obtain a ...

We introduce extended tropicalizations for closed subvarieties of toric varieties and show that the analytification of a quasprojective variety over a nonarchimedean field is naturally homeomorphic to the inverse limit of the tropicalizations of its quasiprojective embeddings.
