We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $\pi$ bond, called $\pi$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pristine metal. Like graphene, it can also sustain tensile strain smaller than 24%, indicating superior flexibility. Moreover, due to the small atomic mass and large density of states at the Fermi level, super-B has the highest critical temperature Tc of 25.3 K in single-element superconductors at ambient conditions. We attribute this high Tc of super-B to the giant anharmonicity of two linear acoustic phonon branches and an unusually low optic phonon mode. These predictions provide new insight into the chemical nature of low dimensional boron nanostructures and highlight the potential applications of designing flexible devices and high Tc superconductors.

We predict by first principles calculations that the recently prepared borophene is a pristine two-dimensional (2D) monolayer superconductor, in which the superconductivity can be significantly enhanced by strain and charge carrier doping. The intrinsic metallic ground state with high density of states at Fermi energy and strong Fermi surface nesting lead to sizeable electron-phonon coupling, making the freestanding borophene superconduct with $T_c$ close to 19.0 K. The tensi...

Superconductivity in two-dimensional compounds is widely concerned, not only due to its application in constructing nano-superconducting devices, but also for the general scientific interests. Very recently, borophene (two-dimensional boron sheet) has been successfully grown on the Ag(111) surface, through direct evaporation of a pure boron source. The experiment unveiled two types of borophene structures, namely $\beta_{12}$ and $\chi_3$. Herein, we employed density-function...

Recent success in synthesizing two-dimensional borophene on silver substrate attracts strong interest in exploring its possible extraordinary physical properties. By using the density functional theory calculations, we show that borophene is highly stretchable along the transverse direction. The strain-to-failure in the transverse direction is nearly twice as that along the longitudinal direction. The straining induced flattening and subsequent stretch of the flat borophene a...

Recent synthesis of monolayer borophene (triangle boron monolayer) on the substrate opens the era of boron nanosheet (Science, 350, 1513, $\mathbf{2015}$), but the structural stability and novel physical properties are still open issues. Here we demonstrated borophene can be stabilized with fully surface hydrogenation, called as borophane, from first-principles calculations. Most interesting, it shows that borophane has direction-dependent Dirac cones, which are mainly contri...

The element boron has long been central to two-dimensional superconducting materials, and numerous studies have demonstrated the presence of superconductivity in various boron-based structures. Recent work introduced a new variant: Bilayer Kagome borophene, characterized by its bilayer Kagome lattice with van Hove singularity. Using first-principles calculations, our research investigates the unique electronic structure and superconducting properties of Bilayer Kagome borophe...

The small atomic mass of boron indicates strong electron-phonon coupling, so it may have a brilliant performance in superconductivity. Recently, a new 2D boride sheet with ordered metal vacancies and surface terminals (Mo4/3B2-x) was realized in experiments (Science 2021, 373, 801). Here, the 2D monolayer freestanding Mo4/3B2is evidenced to be thermodynamically stable. Through electronic structure, phonon spectrum and electron-phonon coupling, monolayer Mo4/3B2 is found to be...

We explore the emergence of phonon-mediated superconductivity in bilayer borophenes by controlled intercalation with elements from the groups of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metals, using systematic first-principles and Eliashberg calculations. We show that the superconducting properties are primarily governed by the interplay between the out-of-plane ($p_{z}$) boron states and the partially occupied in-plane ($s+p_{x,y}$) bonding states at the Fermi level. Our Elia...

Recent experimental advances for the fabrication of various borophene sheets introduced new structures with a wide prospect of applications. Borophene is the boron atoms analogue of graphene. Borophene exhibits various structural polymorphs all of which are metallic. In this work, we employed first-principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of five different single-layer borophene sheets. In particular, we analyzed the effect of...

We study the mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron, borophenes, by first-principles calculations. The recently synthesized borophene with 1/6 concentration of hollow hexagons (HH) is shown to have in-plane modulus C up to 210 N/m and bending stiffness as low as D = 0.39 eV. Thus, its Foppl-von Karman number per unit area, defined as C/D, reaches 568 nm-2, over twofold higher than graphene's value, establishing the borophene as one of the most flexible materials....

We introduce two-dimensional borane, a single-layered material of BH stoichiometry, with promising electronic properties. We show that, according to Density Functional Theory calculations, two-dimensional borane is semimetallic, with two symmetry-related Dirac cones meeting right at the Fermi energy $E_f$. The curvature of the cones is lower than in graphene, thus closer to the ideal linear dispersion. Its structure, formed by a puckered trigonal boron network with hydrogen a...
