We study the motion of an impurity in a two-leg ladder interacting with two fermionic baths along each leg, a simple model bridging cold atom quantum simulators with an idealised description of the basic transport processes in a layered heterostructure. Using the linked-cluster expansion we obtain exact analytical results for the single-particle Green's function and find that the long-time behaviour is dominated by an intrinsic orthogonality catastrophe associated to the moti...

We investigate the scattering off dilute magnetic impurities placed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. In the low-temperature limit, the impurity moments are Kondo-screened by the surface-state electrons, despite their exotic locking of spin and momentum. We determine signatures of the Kondo effect appearing in quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns as recorded by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, taking into account the full energy dependence of th...

We have analyzed the behavior of a mobile quantum impurity in a bath formed by a two-leg bosonic ladder by a combination of field theory (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid) and numerical (Density Matrix Renormalization Group) techniques. Computing the Green's function of the impurity as a function of time at different momenta, we find a power law decay at zero momentum, which signals the breakdown of any quasi-particle description of the impurity motion. We compute the exponent both ...

We study the Kondo physics of a quantum magnetic impurity in two-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs), either intrinsic or induced on the surface of a bulk topological insulator, using a numerical renormalization group technique. We show that, despite sharing the p + ip pairing symmetry, intrinsic and extrinsic TSCs host different physical processes that produce distinct Kondo signatures. Extrinsic TSCs harbor an unusual screening mechanism involving both electron a...

We present a theoretical approach to describe the 2D transport properties of the surfaces of three dimensional topological insulators (3DTIs) including disorder and phonon scattering effects. The method that we present is able to take into account the effects of the strong disorder-induced carrier density inhomogeneities that characterize the ground state of the surface of 3DTIs, especially at low doping, as recently shown experimentally. Due to the inhomogeneous nature of th...

We construct a theory of charge transport by the surface states of topological insulators in three dimensions. The focus is on the experimentally relevant case when the electron doping is such that the Fermi energy $\epsilon_F$ and transport scattering time $\tau$ satisfy $\epsilon_F \tau/\hbar \gg 1$, but sufficiently low that $\epsilon_F$ lies below the bottom of the conduction band. Our theory is based on the spin density matrix and takes the quantum Liouville equation as ...

We study the effects of extended and localized potentials and a magnetic field on the Dirac electrons residing at the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We use a lattice model to numerically study the various states; we show how the potentials can be chosen in a way which effectively avoids the problem of fermion doubling on a lattice. We show that extended potentials of different shapes can give rise to states which propagate freely along the potential but...

We theoretically study the spin and charge generation along with the electron transport on a disordered surface of a doped three-dimensional topological insulator/magnetic insulator junction by using Green's function techniques. We find that the spin and charge current are induced by not only local but also nonlocal magnetization dynamics through nonmagnetic impurity scattering on the disordered surface of the doped topological insulator. We also clarify that the spin current...

We show that the magnetic susceptibility of a dilute ensemble of magnetic impurities in a conductor with a relativistic electronic spectrum is non-analytic in the inverse tempertature at $1/T\to 0$. We derive a general theory of this effect and construct the high-temperature expansion for the disorder averaged susceptibility to any order, convergent at all tempertaures down to a possible ordering transition. When applied to Ising impurities on a surface of a topological insul...

While standard scaling arguments show that a system of non-interacting electrons in two dimensions and in the presence of uncorrelated disorder is insulating, in this work we discuss the case where inter-impurity correlations are included. We find that for point-like impurities and an infinite inter-impurity correlation length a mobility edge exists in 2D even if the individual impurity potentials are random. In the uncorrelated system we recover the scaling results, while in...
