We give a complete classification of twists of supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories in dimensions $2\leq n \leq 10$. We formulate supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory classically using the BV formalism, and then we construct an action of the supersymmetry algebra using the language of $L_\infty$ algebras. For each orbit in the space of square-zero supercharges in the supersymmetry algebra, under the action of the spin group and the group of R-symmetries, we give a description of the corresponding twisted theory. These twists can be described in terms of mixed holomorphic-topological versions of Chern--Simons and BF theory.

We argue that holomorphic twists of supersymmetric field theories naturally come with a symmetry $L_\infty$-algebra that nontrivially extends holomorphic symmetry. We show that every twist of pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group GL(N) can be realized as an open-string field theory in topological string theory. Our approach reinterprets twists of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory as generalized Chern-Simons theories, and identifies topological string backgrounds that produce the corresponding Chern-Simons theories.

We give a one-dimensional interpretation of the four-dimensional twisted N=1 superYang-Mills theory on a Kaehler manifold by performing an appropriate dimensional reduction. We prove the existence of a 6-generator superalgebra, which does not possess any invariant Lagrangian but contains two different subalgebras that determine the twisted and untwisted formulations of the N=1 superYang-Mills theory.

This is a companion paper of a long work appeared in [1] discussing the super-Chern-Simons theory on supermanifolds. Here, it is emphasized that the BV formalism is naturally formulated using integral forms for any supersymmetric and supergravity models and we show how to deal with $A_\infty$-algebras emerging from supermanifold structures.
