It has recently been realised that polystable, holomorphic sums of line bundles over smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds provide a fertile ground for heterotic model building. Large numbers of phenomenologically promising such models have been constructed for various classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we focus on a case study for the tetra-quadric - a Calabi-Yau hypersurface embedded in a product of four CP1 spaces. We address the question of finiteness of the class of ...

In this work, we report the results of applying deep learning based on hybrid convolutional-recurrent and purely recurrent neural network architectures to the dataset of almost one million complete intersection Calabi-Yau four-folds (CICY4) to machine-learn their four Hodge numbers $h^{1,1}, h^{2,1}, h^{3,1}, h^{2,2}$. In particular, we explored and experimented with twelve different neural network models, nine of which are convolutional-recurrent (CNN-RNN) hybrids with the R...

We study machine learning of phenomenologically relevant properties of string compactifications, which arise in the context of heterotic line bundle models. Both supervised and unsupervised learning are considered. We find that, for a fixed compactification manifold, relatively small neural networks are capable of distinguishing consistent line bundle models with the correct gauge group and the correct chiral asymmetry from random models without these properties. The same dis...

We revisit the question of predicting both Hodge numbers $h^{1,1}$ and $h^{2,1}$ of complete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) 3-folds using machine learning (ML), considering both the old and new datasets built respectively by Candelas-Dale-Lutken-Schimmrigk / Green-H\"ubsch-Lutken and by Anderson-Gao-Gray-Lee. In real world applications, implementing a ML system rarely reduces to feed the brute data to the algorithm. Instead, the typical workflow starts with an exploratory dat...

We analyze heterotic line bundle models on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds over weak Fano bases. In order to facilitate Wilson line breaking to the standard model group, we focus on elliptically fibered three-folds with a second section and a freely-acting involution. Specifically, we consider toric weak Fano surfaces as base manifolds and identify six such manifolds with the required properties. The requisite mathematical tools for the construction of line bundle...

The goal of identifying the Standard Model of particle physics and its extensions within string theory has been one of the principal driving forces in string phenomenology. Recently, the incorporation of artificial intelligence in string theory and certain theoretical advancements have brought to light unexpected solutions to mathematical hurdles that have so far hindered progress in this direction. In this review we focus on model building efforts in the context of the $E_8\...

We review advancements in deep learning techniques for complete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) 3- and 4-folds, with the aim of understanding better how to handle algebraic topological data with machine learning. We first discuss methodological aspects and data analysis, before describing neural networks architectures. Then, we describe the state-of-the art accuracy in predicting Hodge numbers. We include new results on extrapolating predictions from low to high Hodge numbers,...

We apply deep-learning techniques to the string landscape, in particular, $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory on simply-connected Calabi-Yau threefolds with line bundles. It turns out that three-generation models cluster in particular islands specified by deep autoencoder networks and k-means++ clustering. Especially, we explore mutual relations between model parameters and the cluster with densest three-generation models (called "3-generation island"). We find that the 3-genera...

We perform model searches on smooth Calabi-Yau compactifications for both the supersymmetric E8xE8 and SO(32) as well as for the non-supersymmetric SO(16)xSO(16) heterotic strings simultaneously. We consider line bundle backgrounds on both favorable CICYs with relatively small h_11 and the Schoen manifold. Using Gram matrices we systematically analyze the combined consequences of the Bianchi identities and the tree-level Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations inside the Kahler con...

We present a numerical computation, based on neural network techniques, of the physical Yukawa couplings in a heterotic string theory compactification on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with non-standard embedding. The model belongs to a large class of heterotic line bundle models that have previously been identified and whose low-energy spectrum precisely matches that of the MSSM plus fields uncharged under the Standard Model group. The relevant quantities for the calculation,...
