We discuss physical constructions, and the boundary properties of various symmetry protected topological phases that involve 1-form symmetries, from one spatial dimension (1d) to four spatial dimensions (4d). For example, the prototype 3d boundary state of 4d SPT states involving 1-form symmetries can be either a gapless photon phase (quantum electrodynamics) or gapped topological order enriched by 1-form symmetries, namely the loop excitations of these topological orders carry nontrivial 1-form symmetry charges. This study also serves the purpose of diagnosing anomaly of 3d states of matter. Connection between SPT states with 1-form symmetries and condensed matter systems such as quantum dimer models at one lower dimension will also be discussed. Whether a quantum dimer model can have a trivial gapped phase or not depends on the nature of its corresponding bulk state in one higher dimension.

We describe recent progress in our understanding of the interplay between interactions, symmetry, and topology in states of quantum matter. We focus on a minimal generalization of the celebrated topological band insulators to interacting many particle systems, known as Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases. In common with the topological band insulators these states have a bulk gap and no exotic excitations but have non-trivial surface states that are protected by symme...

In this work we study gapped boundary states of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in 4+1d, which are characterized by mixed $\mathbb{Z}_N$-gravity response, and the closely related phases protected by $C_N$ rotation symmetry. We show that if $N\notin \{2,4,8,16\}$, any symmetry-preserving boundary theory is necessarily gapless for the root SPT state. We then propose a 3+1d $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory coupled to fermionic matter as a candidate ...

We analyze $2+1d$ and $3+1d$ Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases of matter protected by onsite symmetry group $G$ by using dual bulk and boundary approaches. In the bulk we study an effective field theory which upon coupling to a background flat $G$ gauge field furnishes a purely topological response theory. The response action evaluated on certain manifolds, with appropriate choice of background gauge field, defines a set of SPT topological invariants. Furthe...

We develop a mathematical theory of symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and anomaly-free symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders in all dimensions via two different approaches with an emphasis on the second approach. The first approach is to gauge the symmetry in the same dimension by adding topological excitations as it was done in the 2d case, in which the gauging process is mathematically described by the minimal modular extensions of unitary braided fusion 1-catego...

We consider compact $U^\kappa(1)$ gauge theory in 3+1D with the $2\pi$-quantized topological term ${\sum_{I, J =1}^\kappa\frac{K_{IJ}}{4\pi}\int_{M^4}F^I\wedge F^J}$. At energies below the gauge charges' gaps but above the monopoles' gaps, this field theory has an emergent ${\mathbb{Z}_{k_1}^{(1)}\times\mathbb{Z}_{k_2}^{(1)}\times\cdots}$ 1-symmetry, where $k_i$ are the diagonal elements of the Smith normal form of $K$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{0}^{(1)}$ is regarded as $U(1)^{(1)}$. We consider quantum many body systems with generalized symmetries, such as the higher form symmetries introduced recently, and the "tensor symmetry". We consider a general form of lattice Hamiltonians which allow a certain level of nonlocality. Based on the assumption of dual generalized symmetries, we explicitly construct low energy excited states. We also derive the 't Hooft anomaly for the general Hamiltonians after "gauging" the dual generalized symmetries. A 3d system wi...

We study gapless phases in (3+1)d in the presence of 1-form and non-invertible duality symmetries. Using the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) approach, we classify the gapless symmetry-protected (gSPT) phases in these setups, with particular focus on intrinsically gSPTs (igSPTs). These are symmetry protected critical points which cannot be deformed to a trivially gapped phase without spontaneously breaking the symmetry. Although these are by now well-known in (1+1)d...

By definition, the physics of the $d-$dimensional (dim) boundary of a $(d+1)-$dim symmetry protected topological (SPT) state cannot be realized as itself on a $d-$dim lattice. If the symmetry of the system is unitary, then a formal way to determine whether a $d-$dim theory must be a boundary or not, is to couple this theory to a gauge field (or to "gauge" its symmetry), and check if there is a gauge anomaly. In this paper we discuss the following question: can the boundary of...

A 3d symmetry protected topological phase, by definition must have symmetry protected nontrivial boundary states, namely its 2d boundary must be either gapless or degenerate. In this work we demonstrate that once we couple a 3d SPT phase to a lattice dynamical Z2 gauge field, in many cases the Z2 vison loop excitation (line defect) can be viewed as a "1d boundary" of the 3d SPT phase, and this line defect is guaranteed to have gapless or degenerate spectrum, which is also pro...

We investigate (3+1)d topological orders in fermionic systems with an anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}^{\mathrm{F}}$ symmetry, where its $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{F}}$ subgroup is the fermion parity. Such an anomalous symmetry arises as the discrete subgroup of the chiral U(1) symmetry of $\nu$ copies of Weyl fermions of the same chirality. Guided by the crystalline correspondence principle, we construct (3+1)d symmetry-preserving gapped states on the boundary of a closely related (4+...
