We study N=(0,2) deformed (2,2) two-dimensional sigma models. Such heterotic models were discovered previously on the world sheet of non-Abelian strings supported by certain four-dimensional N=1 theories. We study geometric aspects and holomorphic properties of these models, and derive a number of exact expressions for the beta functions in terms of the anomalous dimensions analogous to the NSVZ beta function in four-dimensional Yang-Mills. Instanton calculus provides a strai...

We investigate some peculiarities in the calculation of the two-loop beta-function of $N=1$ supersymmetric models which are intimately related to the so-called "Anomaly Puzzle". There is an apparent paradox when the computation is performed in the framework of the covariant derivative background field method. In this formalism, it is obtained a finite two-loop effective action, although a non-null coefficient for the beta-function is achieved by means of the renormalized two-...

We have calculated the first-order beta-functions for a sigma-model ( with dilaton) dualized with respect to an arbitrary Lie group that acts without isotropy. We find that non-abelian duality preserves conformal invariance for semi-simple groups, but in general there is an extra contribution to the beta-function proportional to the trace of the structure constants, which cannot be absorbed into an additional dilaton shift. Two particular examples, a Bianchi V cosmological ba...

Two distinct $\eta$-deformations of strings on AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ can be defined; both amount to integrable quantum deformations of the string non-linear sigma model, but only one is itself a superstring background. In this paper we compare their conjectured all-loop worldsheet S matrices and derive the corresponding Bethe equations. We find that, while the S matrices are apparently different, they lead to the same Bethe equations. Moreover, in either case the eigenvalues of ...

The scattering amplitudes of gauge bosons in heterotic and open superstring theories are related by the single-valued projection which yields heterotic amplitudes by selecting a subset of multiple zeta value coefficients in the $\alpha'$ (string tension parameter) expansion of open string amplitudes. In the present work, we argue that this relation holds also at the level of low-energy expansions (or individual Feynman diagrams) of the respective effective actions, by investi...

In this thesis are presented two aplications of the sigma model for the superstring in the pure spinor formulation. The first aplication concerns the computation of the one-loop conformal invariance for the type II superstring, resulting in equations of motion written in superspace for the background fields coupled to the superstring. The second application is related to the BRST invariance of the heterotic superstring at the quantum level, which allows to find stringy correc...

This contribution gives in sigma-model language a short review of recent work on T-duality for open strings in the presence of abelian or non-abelian gauge fields. Furthermore, it adds a critical discussion of the relation between RG beta-functions and the Born-Infeld action in the case of a string coupled to a D-brane.

The sigma model action described in this paper differs in four important features from the usual sigma model action for the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz heterotic superstring in a massless background. Firstly, the action is constructed on an N=(2,0) super-worldsheet using a Kahler potential and an Ogievetsky-Sokatchev constraint; secondly, the target-space background fields are unconstrained; thirdly, the target-space dilaton couples to the two-dimensional curvature; and fo...

The problem of quantum equivalence between non-linear sigma models related by Abelian or non-Abelian T-duality is studied in perturbation theory. Using the anomalous Ward identity for Weyl symmetry we derive a relation between the Weyl anomaly coefficients of the original and dual theories. The analysis is not restricted to conformally invariant backgrounds. The formalism is applied to the study of two examples. The first is a model based on SU(2) non-Abelian T duality. The s...

We consider confining strings in pure gluodynamics and its extensions with adjoint (s)quarks. We argue that there is a direct map between the set of bulk fields and the worldsheet degrees of freedom. This suggests a close link between the worldsheet $S$-matrix and parton scattering amplitudes. We report an amusing relation between the Polchinski--Strominger amplitude responsible for the breakdown of integrability on the string worldsheet and the Yang--Mills $\beta$-function \...
