We calculate the scattering of two rotating objects with the linear-in-curvature spin-induced multipoles of Kerr black holes at $\mathcal{O}(G^2)$ and all orders in the spins of both objects. This is done including the complete set of contact terms potentially relevant to Kerr-black-hole scattering at $\mathcal{O}(G^2)$. As such, Kerr black holes should be described by this scattering amplitude for a specific choice of values for the contact-term coefficients. The inclusion o...

We study the scattering of massive spin-half waves by a Schwarzschild black hole using analytical and numerical methods. We begin by extending a recent perturbation theory calculation to next order to obtain Born series for the differential cross section and Mott polarization, valid at small couplings. We continue by deriving an approximation for glory scattering of massive spinor particles by considering classical timelike geodesics and spin precession. Next, we formulate th...

The massless (or ultrarelativistic) limit of a Schwarzschild black hole with fixed energy was determined long ago in the form of the Aichelburg-Sexl shockwave, but the status of the same limit for a Kerr black hole is less clear. In this paper, we explore the ultrarelativistic limit of Kerr in the class of Kerr-Schild impulsive pp-waves by exploiting a relation between the metric profile and the eikonal phase associated with scattering between a scalar and the source of the m...

We resolve subtleties in calculating the post-Minksowskian dynamics of binary systems, as a spin expansion, from massive scattering amplitudes of fixed finite spin. In particular, the apparently ambiguous spin Casimir terms can be fully determined from the gradient of the spin-diagonal part of the amplitudes with respect to $S^2 = -s(s+1)\hbar^2$, using an interpolation between massive amplitudes with different spin representations. From two-loop amplitudes of spin-0 and spin...

This is a study of the scattering and absorption of planar gravitational waves by a Kerr black hole in vacuum. We apply the partial wave method to compute cross sections for the special case of radiation incident along the rotation axis. A catalogue of numerically-accurate cross sections is presented, for a range of incident wavelengths $M\omega \le 4$ and rotation rates $a \le 0.999M$. Three effects are studied in detail: polarization, helicity-reversal and glory scattering....

We revisit the problem of scalar and electromagnetic waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole from complex angular momentum techniques. We focus more particularly on the associated differential scattering cross sections. We derive an exact representation of the corresponding scattering amplitudes by replacing the discrete sum over integer values of the angular momentum which defines their partial wave expansions by a background integral in the complex angular momentum ...

Aspects of super-planckian gravitational scattering and black hole formation are investigated, largely via a partial-wave representation. At large and decreasing impact parameters, amplitudes are expected to be governed by single graviton exchange, and then by eikonalized graviton exchange, for which partial-wave amplitudes are derived. In the near-Schwarzschild regime, perturbation theory fails. However, general features of gravitational scattering associated with black hole...

We study scattering on the black hole horizon in a partial wave basis, with an impact parameter of the order of the Schwarzschild radius or less. This resembles the strong gravity regime where quantum gravitational effects appear. The scattering is governed by an infinite number of virtual gravitons exchanged on the horizon. Remarkably, they can all be summed non-perturbatively in $\hbar$ and $\gamma \sim M_{Pl}/M_{BH}$. These results generalise those obtained from studying g...

Gravitational wave observatories targeted for compact binary coalescence, such as LIGO and VIRGO, require various theoretical inputs for their efficient detection. One of such inputs are analytical description of binary dynamics at sufficiently separated orbital scales, commonly known as post-Newtonian dynamics. One approach for determining such two-body effective Hamiltonians is to use quantum scattering amplitudes. This dissertation aims at an improved understanding of cl...

Wave propagations in the presence of black holes is a significant problem both in theoretical and observational aspects, especially after the discovery of gravitational wave and confirmation of black holes. We study the scattering of massless scalar field by a charged dilatonic black hole in frame of full wave theory. We apply partial wave method to obtain the scattering cross sections of the scalar field, and investigate how the black hole charge affects the scalar scatterin...
