Random packings of objects of a particular shape are ubiquitous in science and engineering. However, such jammed matter states have eluded any systematic theoretical treatment due to the strong positional and orientational correlations involved. In recent years progress on a fundamental description of jammed matter could be made by starting from a constant volume ensemble in the spirit of conventional statistical mechanics. Recent work has shown that this approach, first intr...

We present an efficient Monte Carlo method for the lattice sphere packing problem in d dimensions. We use this method to numerically discover de novo the densest lattice sphere packing in dimensions 9 through 20. Our method goes beyond previous methods not only in exploring higher dimensions but also in shedding light on the statistical mechanics underlying the problem in question. We observe evidence of a phase transition in the thermodynamic limit $d\to\infty$. In the dimen...

The densest amorphous packing of rigid particles is known as random close packing. It has long been appreciated that higher densities are achieved by using collections of particles with a variety of sizes. The variety of sizes is often quantified by the polydispersity of the particle size distribution: the standard deviation of the radius divided by the mean radius. Several prior studies quantified the increase of the packing density as a function of polydispersity. Of course...

A random packing of hard particles represents a fundamental model for granular matter. Despite its importance, analytical modeling of random packings remains difficult due to the existence of strong correlations which preclude the development of a simple theory. Here, we take inspiration from liquid theories for the $n$-particle angular correlation function to develop a formalism of random packings of hard particles from the bottom-up. A progressive expansion into a shell of ...

We present the first study of disordered jammed hard-sphere packings in four-, five- and six-dimensional Euclidean spaces. Using a collision-driven packing generation algorithm, we obtain the first estimates for the packing fractions of the maximally random jammed (MRJ) states for space dimensions $d=4$, 5 and 6 to be $\phi_{MRJ} \simeq 0.46$, 0.31 and 0.20, respectively. To a good approximation, the MRJ density obeys the scaling form $\phi_{MRJ}= c_1/2^d+(c_2 d)/2^d$, where ...

Circles of a single size can pack together densely in a hexagonal lattice, but adding in size variety disrupts the order of those packings. We conduct simulations which generate dense random packings of circles with specified size distributions, and measure the area fraction in each case. While the size distributions can be arbitrary, we find that for a wide range of size distributions the random close packing area fraction $\phi_{rcp}$ is determined to high accuracy by the p...

We investigate equal spheres packings generated from several experiments and from a large number of different numerical simulations. The structural organization of these disordered packings is studied in terms of the network of common neighbours. This geometrical analysis reveals sharp changes in the network's clustering occurring at the packing fractions (fraction of volume occupied by the spheres respect to the total volume, $\rho$) corresponding to the so called Random Loo...

The Percus-Yevick theory for monodisperse hard spheres gives very good results for the pressure and structure factor of the system in a whole range of densities that lie within the liquid phase. However, the equation seems to lead to a very unacceptable result beyond that region. Namely, the Percus-Yevick theory predicts a smooth behavior of the pressure that diverges only when the volume fraction $\eta$ approaches unity. Thus, within the theory there seems to be no indicatio...

The maximally random jammed (MRJ) state is the most random configuration of strictly jammed (mechanically rigid) nonoverlapping objects. MRJ packings are hyperuniform, meaning their long-wavelength density fluctuations are anomalously suppressed compared to typical disordered systems, i.e., their structure factors $S(\mathbf{k})$ tend to zero as the wavenumber $|\mathbf{k}|$ tends to zero. Here, we show that generating high-quality strictly jammed states for space dimensions ...

Finding the optimal random packing of non-spherical particles is an open problem with great significance in a broad range of scientific and engineering fields. So far, this search has been performed only empirically on a case-by-case basis, in particular, for shapes like dimers, spherocylinders and ellipsoids of revolution. Here, we present a mean-field formalism to estimate the packing density of axisymmetric non-spherical particles. We derive an analytic continuation from t...
