Long ago, Newman and Janis showed that a complex deformation $z\rightarrow z+i a$ of the Schwarzschild solution produces the Kerr solution. The underlying explanation for this relationship has remained obscure. The complex deformation has an electromagnetic counterpart: by shifting the Coloumb potential, we obtain the EM field of a certain rotating charge distribution which we term $\sqrt{\rm Kerr}$. In this note, we identify the origin of this shift as arising from the expon...

Massive bosonic fields of arbitrary spin are predicted by general extensions of the Standard Model. It has been recently shown that there exists a family of bimetric theories of gravity - including massive gravity - which are free of Boulware-Deser ghosts at the nonlinear level. This opens up the possibility to describe consistently the dynamics of massive spin-2 particles in a gravitational field. Within this context, we develop the study of massive spin-2 fluctuations - inc...

Considerable attention has recently focused on gravity theories obtained by extending general relativity with additional scalar, vector, or tensor degrees of freedom. In this paper, we show that the black-hole solutions of these theories are essentially indistinguishable from those of general relativity. Thus, we conclude that a potential observational verification of the Kerr metric around an astrophysical black hole cannot, in and of itself, be used to distinguish between t...

It has been shown that a special set of three-point amplitudes between two massive spinning states and a graviton reproduces the linearised stress-energy tensor for a Kerr black hole in the classical limit. In this work we revisit this result and compare it to the analysis of the amplitudes describing the interaction of leading Regge states of the open and closed superstring. We find an all-spin result for the classical limit of two massive spinning states interacting with a ...

We develop a novel amplitude bootstrap technique manifestly free of unphysical poles for classically spinning particles interacting with gravitons utilizing only the gauge/gravity double-copy and physical factorization limits. Combined with non-factorization polynomial contact contributions from physical data for Kerr black holes, we can address high-spin-order covariant gravitational Compton amplitudes, identifying a pattern for the amplitude that we believe could extend to ...

In a seminal work, Hawking showed that natural states for free quantum matter fields on classical spacetimes that solve the spherically symmetric vacuum Einstein equations are KMS states of non-vanishing temperature. Although Hawking's calculation does not include backreaction of matter on geometry, it is more than plausible that the corresponding Hawking radiation leads to black hole evaporation which is in principle observable. Obviously, an improvement of Hawking's calcu...

We review some relevant results in the context of higher spin black holes in three-dimensional spacetimes, focusing on their asymptotic behaviour and thermodynamic properties. For simplicity, we mainly discuss the case of gravity nonminimally coupled to spin-3 fields, being nonperturbatively described by a Chern-Simons theory of two independent sl(3,R) gauge fields. Since the analysis is particularly transparent in the Hamiltonian formalism, we provide a concise discussion of...

The classical scattering of spinning objects is well described by the spinor-helicity formalism for heavy particles. Using these variables, we derive spurious-pole-free, all-spin opposite-helicity Compton amplitudes (factorizing on physical poles to the minimal, all-spin three-point amplitudes of ref. \cite{Arkani-Hamed:2017jhn}) in the classical limit for QED, QCD, and gravity. The cured amplitudes are subject to deformations by contact terms, the vast majority of whose cont...

Higher spin gravity is an interesting toy model of stringy geometry. Particularly intriguing is the presence of higher spin gauge transformations that redefine notions of invariance in gravity: the existence of event horizons and singularities in the metric become gauge dependent. In previous work, solutions of spin-3 gravity in the SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation were found, and were proposed to play the role of black holes. However, in the gauge employed there, t...

Kerr-Schild double copy is shown to extend naturally to all free symmetric gauge fields propagating on $(A)dS$ in any dimension. Similarly to the standard lower-spin case, the higher-spin multicopy comes along with the zeroth, single, and double copies. The mass-like term of the Fronsdal spin $s$ field equations fixed by gauge symmetry and the mass of the zeroth copy both appear to be remarkably fine-tuned to fit the multicopy pattern forming a spectrum organized by higher-sp...
