This article studies the estimation of latent community memberships from pairwise interactions in a network of $N$ nodes, where the observed interactions can be of arbitrary type, including binary, categorical, and vector-valued, and not excluding even more general objects such as time series or spatial point patterns. As a generative model for such data, we introduce a stochastic block model with a general measurable interaction space $\mathcal S$, for which we derive inform...

The discovery and analysis of community structure in networks is a topic of considerable recent interest within the physics community, but most methods proposed so far are unsuitable for very large networks because of their computational cost. Here we present a hierarchical agglomeration algorithm for detecting community structure which is faster than many competing algorithms: its running time on a network with n vertices and m edges is O(m d log n) where d is the depth of t...

We propose and study a set of algorithms for discovering community structure in networks -- natural divisions of network nodes into densely connected subgroups. Our algorithms all share two definitive features: first, they involve iterative removal of edges from the network to split it into communities, the edges removed being identified using one of a number of possible "betweenness" measures, and second, these measures are, crucially, recalculated after each removal. We als...

Community detection in graphs has many important and fundamental applications including in distributed systems, compression, image segmentation, divide-and-conquer graph algorithms such as nested dissection, document and word clustering, circuit design, among many others. Finding these densely connected regions of graphs remains an important and challenging problem. Most work has focused on scaling up existing methods to handle large graphs. These methods often partition the ...

Community detection is a critical challenge in analysing real graphs, including social, transportation, citation, cybersecurity, and many other networks. This article proposes three new, general, hierarchical frameworks to deal with this task. The introduced approach supports various linkage-based clustering algorithms, vertex proximity matrices, and graph representation learning models. We compare over a hundred module combinations on the Stochastic Block Model graphs and re...

We survey some of the concepts, methods, and applications of community detection, which has become an increasingly important area of network science. To help ease newcomers into the field, we provide a guide to available methodology and open problems, and discuss why scientists from diverse backgrounds are interested in these problems. As a running theme, we emphasize the connections of community detection to problems in statistical physics and computational optimization.

We propose and analyze a generic method for community recovery in stochastic block models and degree corrected block models. This approach can exactly recover the hidden communities with high probability when the expected node degrees are of order $\log n$ or higher. Starting from a roughly correct community partition given by some conventional community recovery algorithm, this method refines the partition in a cross clustering step. Our results simplify and extend some of t...

Community detection tasks have received a lot of attention across statistics, machine learning, and information theory with a large body of work concentrating on theoretical guarantees for the stochastic block model. One line of recent work has focused on modeling the spectral embedding of a network using Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) in scaling regimes where the ability to detect community memberships improves with the size of the network. However, these regimes are not ver...

Hidden community is a new graph-theoretical concept recently proposed [4], in which the authors also propose a meta-approach called HICODE (Hidden Community Detection) for detecting hidden communities. HICODE is demonstrated through experiments that it is able to uncover previously overshadowed weak layers and uncover both weak and strong layers at a higher accuracy. However, the authors provide no theoretical guarantee for the performance. In this work, we focus on the theor...

Discovering communities in complex networks means grouping nodes similar to each other, to uncover latent information about them. There are hundreds of different algorithms to solve the community detection task, each with its own understanding and definition of what a "community" is. Dozens of review works attempt to order such a diverse landscape -- classifying community discovery algorithms by the process they employ to detect communities, by their explicitly stated definit...
