We consider an impurity problem in a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas, where a spin-down impurity is immersed in a Fermi sea of N spin-up atoms. Using a variational approach and an effective two-channel model, we obtain the energies of the system for a wide range of interaction strength and for various different mass ratios between the impurity and the back ground fermion in the context of heteronuclear mixture. It is demonstrated that in a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas ther...

In this article we study the interaction between an impurity and the gas of Bogoliubov excitations of a Fermi superfluid by mapping it on the polaron problem for an impurity in a BEC. The description of the Fermi superfluid across the BEC-BCS crossover regime is based on a recently developed effective field theory presented in [Eur. Phys. J. B 88, 122 (2015)] and provides us with the interaction-dependent dispersion relations for the Bogoliubov excitations. The behavior of th...

We investigate a single impurity interacting with a free two-dimensional atomic Fermi gas. The interaction between the impurity and the gas is characterized by an arbitrary attractive short-range potential, which, in two dimensions, always admits a two-particle bound state. We provide analytical expressions for the energy and the effective mass of the dressed impurity by including the two-body bound state, which is crucial for strong interactions, in the integral equation for...

We study the thermal evolution of a highly spin-imbalanced, homogeneous Fermi gas with unitarity limited interactions, from a Fermi liquid of polarons at low temperatures to a classical Boltzmann gas at high temperatures. Radio-frequency spectroscopy gives access to the energy, lifetime, and short-range correlations of Fermi polarons at low temperatures $T$. In this regime, we observe a characteristic $T^2$ dependence of the spectral width, corresponding to the quasiparticle ...

The interplay between measurement and quantum correlations in many-body systems can lead to novel types of collective phenomena which are not accessible in isolated systems. In this work, we merge the Zeno-paradigm of quantum measurement theory with the concept of polarons in condensed-matter physics. The resulting quantum-Zeno Fermi-polaron is a quasi-particle which emerges for lossy impurities interacting with a quantum-degenerate bath of fermions. For loss rates of the ord...

Finding the ground state of a fermionic Hamiltonian using quantum Monte Carlo is a very difficult problem, due to the Fermi sign problem. While still scaling exponentially, full configuration-interaction Monte Carlo (FCI-QMC) mitigates some of the exponential variance by allowing annihilation of noise -- whenever two walkers arrive at the same configuration with opposite signs, they are removed from the simulation. While FCI-QMC has been quite successful for quantum chemistry...

From sand piles to electrons in metals, one of the greatest challenges in modern physics is to understand the behavior of an ensemble of strongly interacting particles. A class of quantum many-body systems such as neutron matter and cold Fermi gases share the same universal thermodynamic properties when interactions reach the maximum effective value allowed by quantum mechanics, the so-called unitary limit [1,2]. It is then possible to simulate some astrophysical phenomena in...

We study the ground state and excitations of a one-dimensional trapped polarized Fermi gas interacting with a single impurity. First, we study the tunnelling dynamics of the impurity through a potential barrier, such as one effectively created by a double-well trap. To this end, we perform an exact diagonalization of the full few-body Hamiltonian and analyze the results in a Local Density Approximation. Off-diagonal and one-particle correlation matrices are studied and are sh...

We theoretically analyze inverse radiofrequency (rf) spectroscopy experiments in two-component Fermi gases. We consider a small number of impurity atoms interacting strongly with a bath of majority atoms. In two-dimensional geometries we find that the main features of the rf spectrum correspond to an attractive polaron and a metastable repulsive polaron. Our results suggest that the attractive polaron has been observed in a recent experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 105301 (201...

It is remarkable how the Froehlich polaron, one of the simplest examples of a Quantum Field Theoretical problem, as it basically consists of a single fermion interacting with a scalar Bose field of ion displacements, has resisted full analytical or numerical solution at all coupling since 1950, when its Hamiltonian was first written. The field has been a testing ground for analytical, semi-analytical, and numerical techniques, such as path integrals, strong-coupling perturbat...
