We investigate the mobility of nonlinear localized modes in a generalized discrete Ginzburg-Landau type model, describing a one-dimensional waveguide array in an active Kerr medium with intrinsic, saturable gain and damping. It is shown that exponentially localized, traveling discrete dissipative breather-solitons may exist as stable attractors supported only by intrinsic properties of the medium, i.e., in absence of any external field or symmetry-breaking perturbations. Thro...

For a one-dimensional linear lattice, earlier work has shown how to systematically construct a slowly-decaying linear potential bearing a localized eigenmode embedded in the continuous spectrum. Here, we extend this idea in two directions: The first one is in the realm of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, where the linear operator of the Schrodinger type is considered in the presence of a Kerr focusing or defocusing nonlinearity and the embedded linear mode is cont...

In the present work, we examine a prototypical model for the formation of bright breathers in nonlinear left-handed metamaterial lattices. Utilizing the paradigm of nonlinear transmission lines, we build a relevant lattice and develop a quasi-continuum multiscale approximation that enables us to appreciate both the underlying linear dispersion relation and the potential for bifurcation of nonlinear states. We focus here, more specifically, on bright discrete breathers which b...

The observation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators provides, on the applied side, compact sources of coherent optical frequency combs that have already been applied in coherent communications, dual comb spectroscopy and metrology. On a fundamental level, it enables the study of soliton physics in driven nonlinear cavities. Microresonators are commonly multimode and, as a result, inter-mode interactions inherently occur among mode families - a con...

In this work, we explore a prototypical example of a genuine continuum breather (i.e., not a standing wave) and the conditions under which it can persist in a $\mathcal{P T}$-symmetric medium. As our model of interest, we will explore the sine-Gordon equation in the presence of a $\mathcal{P T}$- symmetric perturbation. Our main finding is that the breather of the sine-Gordon model will only persist at the interface between gain and loss that $\mathcal{P T}$-symmetry imposes ...

Mutual interaction of localized nonlinear waves, e.g. solitons and modulation instability patterns, is a fascinating and intensively-studied topic of nonlinear science. In this research report, we report on the observation of a novel type of breather interaction in telecommunication optical fibers, in which two identical breathers propagate with opposite group velocities. Under certain conditions, neither amplification nor annihilation occur at the collision point and most in...

Solitons, the distinct balance between nonlinearity and dispersion, provide a route toward ultrafast electromagnetic pulse shaping, high-harmonic generation, real-time image processing, and RF photonic communications. Here we newly explore and observe the spatio-temporal breather dynamics of optical soliton crystals in frequency microcombs, examining spatial breathers, chaos transitions, and dynamical deterministic switching in nonlinear measurements and theory. To understand...

We present exact electromagnetic solitary pulses that can be experimentally obtained within nonlinear left-handed metamaterials. The effect of pulse decoherence on the modulation instability of partially incoherent electromagnetic waves is also investigated. The results may contribute to a better understanding of nonlinear electromagnetic pulse propagation in media with negative index of refraction.

Wave-speed management of soliton pulses in a nonlinear metamaterial exhibiting a rich variety of physical effects that are important in a wide range of practical applications, is studied both theoretically and numerically. Ultrashort electromagnetic pulse transmission in such inhomogeneous system is described by a generalized nonlinear Schreodinger equation with space-modulated higher-order dispersive and nonlinear effects of different nature. We present the discovery of thre...

We report on the experimental and numerical observations of synchronisation and desynchronisation of bound states of multiple breathing solitons (breathing soliton molecules) in an ultrafast fibre laser. In the desynchronisation regime, although the breather molecules as wholes are not synchronised to the cavity, the individual breathers within a molecule are synchronised to each other with a delay (lag synchronisation). An intermediate regime between the synchronisation and ...
