In contrast to finite arithmetic configurations, relatively little is known about which infinite patterns can be found in every set of natural numbers with positive density. Building on recent advances showing infinite sumsets can be found, we explore numerous open problems and obstructions to finding other infinite configurations in every set of natural numbers with positive density.

In this paper we propose a conjecture concerning partial sums of an arbitrary finite subset of an abelian group, that naturally arises investigating simple Heffter systems. Then, we show its connection with related open problems and we present some results about the validity of these conjectures.

Let $G$ be an additive abelian group and $S\subset G$ a subset. Let $\Sigma(S)$ denote the set of group elements which can be expressed as a sum of a nonempty subset of $S$. We say $S$ is zero-sum free if $0 \not\in \Sigma(S)$. It was conjectured by R.B.~Eggleton and P.~Erd\"{o}s in 1972 and proved by W.~Gao et. al. in 2008 that $|\Sigma(S)|\geq 19$ provided that $S$ is a zero-sum free subset of an abelian group $G$ with $|S|=6$. In this paper, we determined the structure of ...

Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A_1,...,A_n (n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b_1,...,b_n be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m\leq (k-1)/(n-1) there are more than (k-1)n-(m+1)n(n-1)/2 sets {a_1,...,a_n} such that a_1\in A_1,..., a_n\in A_n, and both a_i\not=a_j and ma_i+b_i\not=ma_j+b_j (or both ma_i\not=ma_j and a_i+b_i\not=a_j+b_j) for all 1\leq i<j...

We study the concept of universal sets from the additive--combinatorial point of view. Among other results we obtain some applications of this type of uniformity to sets avoiding solutions to linear equations, and get an optimal upper bound for the covering number of general sumsets.

In this note some properties of the sum of element orders of a finite abelian group are studied.

Let $A$ and $H$ be nonempty finite sets of integers and positive integers, respectively. The generalized $H$-fold sumset, denoted by $H^{(r)}A$, is the union of the sumsets $h^{(r)}A$ for $h\in H$ where, the sumset $h^{(r)}A$ is the set of all integers that can be represented as a sum of $h$ elements from $A$ with no summand in the representation appearing more than $r$ times. In this paper, we find the optimal lower bound for the cardinality of $H^{(r)}A$, i.e., for $|H^{(r)...

A given subset $A$ of natural numbers is said to be complete if every element of $\N$ is the sum of distinct terms taken from $A$. This topic is strongly connected to the knapsack problem which is known to be NP complete. The main goal of the paper is to study the structure of subset sums in a higher dimension. We show 'dense' sets and generalized arithmetic progrssions in subset sums of certain sets.

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a sequence of $rk$ terms which is made up of $k$ distinct integers each appearing exactly $r$ times in $\mathcal{A}$. The sum of all terms of a subsequence of $\mathcal{A}$ is called a subsequence sum of $\mathcal{A}$. For a nonnegative integer $\alpha \leq rk$, let $\Sigma_{\alpha} (\mathcal{A})$ be the set of all subsequence sums of $\mathcal{A}$ that correspond to the subsequences of length $\alpha$ or more. When $r=1$, we call the subsequence sums as ...

We discuss a structural approach to subset-sum problems in additive combinatorics. The core of this approach are Freiman-type structural theorems, many of which will be presented through the paper. These results have applications in various areas, such as number theory, combinatorics and mathematical physics.
