We provide a formula for the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group of elliptic curves over dihedral extensions of number fields of order $2n$, up to $4^{th}$ powers and primes dividing $n$. Specifically, for odd $n$ it is equal to the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group over the quadratic subextension. A similar formula holds for even $n$.

We study the collection of group structures that can be realized as a group of rational points on an elliptic curve over a finite field (such groups are well known to be of rank at most two). We also study various subsets of this collection which correspond to curves over prime fields or to curves with a prescribed torsion. Some of our results are rigorous and are based on recent advances in analytic number theory, some are conditional under certain widely believed conjecture...

We obtain explicit formulas for the number of non-isomorphic elliptic curves with a given group structure (considered as an abstract abelian group). Moreover, we give explicit formulas for the number of distinct group structures of all elliptic curves over a finite field. We use these formulas to derive some asymptotic estimates and tight upper and lower bounds for various counting functions related to classification of elliptic curves accordingly to their group structure. Fi...

These are the notes from a course of five lectures at the 2009 Park City Math Institute. The focus is on elliptic curves over function fields over finite fields. In the first three lectures, we explain the main classical results (mainly due to Tate) on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this context and its connection to the Tate conjecture about divisors on surfaces. This is preceded by a "Lecture 0" on background material. In the remaining two lectures, we discuss ...

We report on two machine learning experiments in search of statistical relationships between Dirichlet coefficients and root numbers or analytic ranks of certain low-degree $L$-functions. The first experiment is to construct interpretable models based on murmurations, a recently discovered correlation between Dirichlet coefficients and root numbers. We show experimentally that these models achieve high accuracy by learning a combination of Mestre-Nagao type heuristics and mur...

This paper continues the authors previous investigations concerning orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups in quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve, and for the family of the Neumann-Setzer type elliptic curves. Here we present the results of our search for the (analytic) orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups for the cubic twists of $X_0(27)$. Our calculations extend those given by Zagier and Kramarz \cite{ZK} and by Watkins \cite{Wat}. Our main observations concern the asymptoti...

We improve Kolyvagin's upper bound on the order of the $p$-primary part of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve of rank one over a quadratic imaginary field. In many cases, our bound is precisely the one predicted by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula.

We investigate the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group of abelian varieties modulo rational squares. Our main result shows that every square-free natural number appears as the non square-free part of the Tate--Shafarevich group of some abelian variety, thereby validating a conjecture of W. Stein.

Using maximal isotropic submodules in a quadratic module over Z_p, we prove the existence of a natural discrete probability distribution on the set of isomorphism classes of short exact sequences of co-finite type Z_p-modules, and then conjecture that as E varies over elliptic curves over a fixed global field k, the distribution of 0 --> E(k) tensor Q_p/Z_p --> Sel_{p^infty} E --> Sha[p^infty] --> 0 is that one. We show that this single conjecture would explain many of the ...

Let E be an elliptic curve of conductor N and rank one over Q. So there is a non-constant morphism X+0(N) --> E defined over Q, where X+0(N) = X0(N)/wN and wN is the Fricke involution of the modular curve X+0(N). Under this morphism the traces of the Heegner points of X+0(N) map to rational points on E. In this paper we study the index I of the subgroup generated by all these traces on E(Q). We propose and also discuss a conjecture that says that if N is prime and I > 1, then...
