The moduli spaces for Higgs bundles associated to real Lie groups and a closed Riemann surface have multiple connected components. This survey provides a compendium of results concerning the counting of these components in cases where the Lie group is a real forms of a complex simple Lie group. In some cases the components can be described quite explicitly.

Let $X$ be a smooth, complete and connected curve and $G$ be a simple and simply connected algebraic group over $\comp$. We calculate the Picard group of the moduli stack of quasi-parabolic $G$-bundles and identify the spaces of sections of its members to the conformal blocs of Tsuchiya, Ueno and Yamada. We describe the canonical sheaf on these stacks and show that they admit a unique square root, which we will construct explicitly. Finally we show how the results on the stac...

Let G be a simple simply-connected group scheme over a regular local scheme U. Let E be a principal G-bundle over A^1_U trivial away from a subscheme finite over U. We show that E is not necessarily trivial and give some criteria of triviality. To this end we define affine Grassmannians for group schemes and study their Bruhat decompositions for semi-simple group schemes. We also give examples of principal G-bundles over A^1_U with split G such that the bundles are not isomor...

A central role in recent investigations of the duality of F-theory and heterotic strings is played by the moduli of principal bundles, with various structure groups G, over an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifold on which the heterotic theory is compactified. In this note we propose a simple algebro-geometric technique for studying the moduli spaces of principal G-bundles on an arbitrary variety X which is elliptically fibered over a base S: The moduli space itself is nat...

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$. We consider principal bundles over a $k$-scheme with reductive structure group (not necessarily of finite type). It is showm in particular that for $k$ algebraically closed there exists on any complete connected $k$-scheme a universal such bundle. As a consequence, an explicit description of principal bundles with reductive structure group over curves of genus $0$ or $1$ is obtained.

For any smooth connected linear algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field k, we describe the Picard group of the universal moduli stack of principal G-bundles over pointed smooth k-projective curves.

We study the moduli stack of degree $0$ semistable $G$-bundles on an irreducible curve $E$ of arithmetic genus $1$, where $G$ is a connected reductive group. Our main result describes a partition of this stack indexed by a certain family of connected reductive subgroups $H$ of $G$ (the $E$-pseudo-Levi subgroups), where each stratum is computed in terms of $H$-bundles together with the action of the relative Weyl group. We show that this result is equivalent to a Jordan--Cheva...

Let G be a complex reductive group and let C be a smooth curve of genus at least one. We prove a converse to a theorem of Atiyah-Bott concerning the stratification of the space of holomorphic G-bundles on C. In case the genus of C is one, we establish that one has a stratification in the strong sense. The paper concludes with a characterization of the minimally unstable strata in case G is simple.

Let $G$ be a simple simply-connected connected linear algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. We proved a $2$-birational Torelli theorem for the moduli space of semistable principal $G$-bundles over a smooth curve of genus $\geq 3$, which says that if two such moduli spaces are $2$-birational then the curves are isomorphic. We also proved a $3$-birational Torelli theorem for the moduli space of stable symplectic parabolic bundles over a smooth curve of genus $\geq 4$.

For a simply connected, compact, simple Lie group G, the moduli space of flat G-bundles over a closed surface is known to be pre-quantizable at integer levels. For non-simply connected G, however, integrality of the level is not sufficient for pre-quantization, and this paper determines the obstruction -- namely a certain cohomology class in H^3(G^2;Z) -- that places further restrictions on the underlying level. The levels that admit a pre-quantization of the moduli space are...
