We derive absorption indices of ellipticals in clusters at z=0.37 from medium-resolution spectroscopy together with kinematical parameters. We investigate the evolution of the Halpha equivalent width, EW(Halpha), with redshift and its dependence on stellar mass, taking advantage of the first data from the 3D-HST survey, a large spectroscopic Treasury program with the Hubble Space Telescope WFC3. Aims. We present a spectroscopic study of the properties of 64 Balmer break galaxies that show signs of star formation. We present new results on the Fundamental Plane of galaxies in two rich clusters, Cl1358+62 at $z=0.33$ and MS2053--04 at $z=0.58$, based on Keck and HST observations. Our new data triple the sample of galaxies with measured Fundamental Plane parameters at intermediate redshift. We present deep Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and HST/WFC3 imaging in the rest-frame optical for a sample of eight galaxies at z~1.5 with high photometrically-determined stellar masses. The data are combined with VLT/XShooter spectra of five galaxies from van de Sande et al. (2011, 2012 to be submitted). We have computed the higher-order Balmer absorption line indices Hgamma and Hdelta (Worthey & Ottaviani 1997) for stellar population models with variable element ratios. The response of these indices to abundance ratio variations is taken from detailed line formation and model atmosphere calculations. Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) are mostly elliptical galaxies and very rarely have prominent star formation. We found that five out of 8,812 BCGs are E+A (i.e. post-starburst) galaxies, having the H$\delta$~absorption line with an equivalent width $>2.5\AA$ and no distinct emission lines in [O II] and H$\alpha$. We select E+A candidates from a spectroscopic dataset of ~800 field galaxies and measure the E+A fraction at 0.3<z<1 to be 2.7+/-1.1%, a value lower than that in galaxy clusters at comparable redshifts (11+/-3%). HST/WFPC2 imaging for five of our six E+A's shows they have a heterogeneous parent population: these E+A's span a range in half-light radius (0.8-8 kpc) and estimated internal velocity dispersion (50-220 km/s), and they include luminous systems (-21.6<M_Bz-5logh<-19....
