We report new improved photometric redshifts of 1048 galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). A standard chi^2 minimizing method is applied to seven-color UBVIJHK photometry by Fernandez-Soto, Lanzetta, & Yahil (1999). We use 187 template SEDs representing a wide variety of morphology and age of observed galaxies based on a population synthesis model by Kodama & Arimoto (1997). We introduce two new recipes. First, the amount of the internal absorption is changed as a free par...

We present a catalog covering 1.62 deg^2 of the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field with PSF-matched photometry in 30 photometric bands. The catalog covers the wavelength range 0.15um - 24um including the available GALEX, Subaru, CFHT, VISTA and Spitzer data. Catalog sources have been selected from the DR1 UltraVISTA Ks band imaging that reaches a depth of K_{s,tot} = 23.4 AB (90% completeness). The PSF-matched catalog is generated using position-dependent PSFs ensuring accurate colors a...

In this work we use the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) version 2 images to assess the galaxy population out to z ~ 2. We have used two methods of templates fitting of the spectral energy distributions to obtain photometric redshifts and classify the objects. The Bayesian photometric redshifts gave better results when compared with 54 spectroscopic redshifts available in the literature. Analysis of the rest-frame colour distribution shows a bimodality out to z ~ 1.4. We separ...

We present the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS), a spectroscopic redshift survey of ~10.000 very faint galaxies to study the major phase of galaxy assembly 2<z<~6. The survey covers 1 deg^2 in 3 separate fields: COSMOS, ECDFS and VVDS-02h, with targets selection based on an inclusive combination of photometric redshifts and color properties. Spectra covering 3650<lambda<9350 A are obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT with integration times of 14h. Here we present the survey strat...

The K20 survey is an ESO VLT optical and near-infrared spectroscopic survey aimed at obtaining spectral information and redshifts of a complete sample of about 550 objects to K_s\leq20.0 over two independent fields with a total area of 52 arcmin^2. In this paper we discuss the scientific motivation of such a survey, we describe the photometric and spectroscopic properties of the sample, and we release the $K_s$-band photometric catalog. Extensive simulations showed that the s...

The addition of deep near infrared images to the database provided by the HDF-S WFPC2 is essential to monitor the SEDs of the objects on a wide baseline and address a number of key issues including the total stellar content of baryonic mass, the effects of dust extinction, the dependence of morphology on the rest frame wavelength, the photometric redshifts, the detection and nature of extremely red objects (EROs). For these reasons deep near infrared images were obtained with...

The clustering properties of faint K<24 galaxies are measured in ultradeep J, H and K near-IR images of the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S), obtained with ISAAC at the VLT. A relatively large clustering amplitude is found up to K=24, at a level comparable to the measurements at K~19. The redshift distribution of K<24 galaxies extends to z_phot~4-5, and ~40% of the galaxies are at z_phot>2.At the highest redshifts, 2<z_phot<4, galaxies selected in the rest frame optical (K-ban...

We present deep near-infrared Js, H, and Ks band imaging of a field around MS1054-03, a massive cluster at z=0.83. The observations were carried out with ISAAC at the ESO VLT as part of the Faint InfraRed Extragalactic Survey (FIRES). The total integration time amounts to 25.9h in Js, 24.4h in H, and 26.5h in Ks, divided nearly equally between four pointings covering 5.5'x5.3'. The 3-sigma total limiting AB magnitudes for point sources from the shallowest to deepest pointing ...

We present an estimate of the cosmological evolution of the field galaxy luminosity function (LF) in the rest frame 4400 Angstrom B -band up to redshift z=3.5. To this purpose, we use a composite sample of 1541 I--selected galaxies selected down to I_(AB)=27.2 and 138 galaxies selected down to K_(AB)=25 from ground-based and HST multicolor surveys, most notably the new deep JHK images in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) taken with the ISAAC instrument at the ESO-VLT telesc...

We present a catalog of 97 spectroscopic redshifts of z<1 galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) and its Flanking Fields (FFs). In the HDFS proper, we observed approximately half the galaxies brighter than I(AB)=24 and obtained redshifts for 76% of them. Targets in our HDFS sample were pre-selected to be at z<1 based on photometric redshifts, while in the FFs a simple magnitude cut was used. The photometric redshift pre-selection in the HDFS resulted in a spectroscopi...
