We investigate the hypothesis that $\lyal$ absorption lines arise in two populations of halos --- minihalos of small circular velocity ($V_c \la 55$ km s$^{-1}$) in which star formation and metal production are inhibited by photoionization of the UV background radiation, and large galactic halos ($55 \la V_c \la 250$ km s$^{-1}$) which possess stars and metals. Based on the model of $\lyal$-absorbing gas confined in both populations of halos, we attempt to explain the recent ...

(ABRIDGED) We present a study of the highly ionized gas (plasma) associated with damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems at z=2.1-3.1. We search for O VI absorption and corresponding Si IV, C IV, and N V in a Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet-Visible Echelle Spectrograph (VLT/UVES) sample of 35 DLA systems with data covering O VI at S/N>10. We report twelve DLAs (nine intervening and three at <5000 km/s from the QSO redshift) with detections of O VI absorption. There are no clear O V...

We differentiate between the metal enrichment of the gas in virialized minihalos and that of the intergalactic medium at high redshift, pertinent to cosmological reionization, with the initial expectation that gas in the high density regions within formed dark matter halos may be more robust thus resistant to mixing with lower density intergalactic medium. Using detailed hydrodynamic simulations of gas clouds in minihalos subject to destructive processes associated with the e...

Our objective is to investigate the physical properties of the ionised gas of the low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, IC 10, at various spatial scales: from individual HII regions to the entire galaxy scale and examine whether diagnostics for integrated measurements introduce bias in the results. We modeled the ionised gas combining the mid- and far-infrared fine-structure cooling lines observed with Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS, with the photoionisation code Cloudy. The free para...

We develop a new method to constrain the physical conditions in the cool (~10^4 K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) from measurements of ionic column densities, by assuming that the cool CGM spans a large range of gas densities and that small high-density clouds are hierarchically embedded in large low-density clouds. The new method combines the information available from different sightlines during the photoionization modeling, thus yielding tighter constraints on CGM properties ...

(Abridged) This paper presents an absorption-line study of the multiphase circumgalactic medium (CGM) based on observations of Lya, CII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, and SiIV absorption transitions in the vicinities of 195 galaxies at redshift z<0.176. The galaxy sample is established based on a cross-comparison between public galaxy and QSO survey data and is characterized by a median redshift of <z>=0.041, a median projected distance of <d>=362 kpc to the sightline of the background Q...

To investigate the evolution of metal-enriched gas over recent cosmic epochs as well as to characterize the diffuse, ionized, metal-enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM), we have conducted a blind survey for C IV absorption systems in 89 QSO sightlines observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We have identified 42 absorbers at z < 0.16, comprising the largest uniform blind sample size to date in this redshift range. Our measurements ind...

The pervasive presence of warm gas in galaxy halos suggests that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is multiphase in its ionization structure and complex in its kinematics. Some recent state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations predict an azimuthal dependence of CGM metallicities. We investigate the presence of such a trend by analyzing the distribution of gas properties in the CGM around 47 $z <$ 0.7 galaxies from the Multiphase Galaxy Halos Survey determined using a clou...

In Keck HIRES spectra of 9 QSOs we identify a sample of 908 CIV absorber components in 188 systems outside the Lyman forest in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4.4, with related lines of SiIV, CII, SiII and NV. The properties of the CIV absorbers are almost constant with z. We find a mild increase in Omega(CIV) with decreasing z with a mean = (3.8+/-0.7)*10^(-8) (spatially flat LCDM cosmology and h = 0.71). Using Omega(b) from the CMB and ionization fractions from our data we obt...

We present an analytic model for the cool, $T \approx 10^4$ K, circumgalactic medium (CGM), describing the gas distribution, thermal and ionization state. Our model assumes (total) pressure equilibrium with the ambient warm/hot CGM, photoionization by the metagalactic radiation field, and allows for non-thermal pressure support, parametrized by the ratio of thermal pressures, $\eta = P_{\rm hot,th}/P_{\rm cool,th}$. We apply the model to the COS-Halos data set and find that a...
