Intra-cluster (IC) populations are expected to be a natural result of the hierarchical assembly of clusters, yet their low space densities make them difficult to detect and study. We present the first definitive kinematic detection of an IC population of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo cluster, around the central galaxy, M87. This study focuses on the Virgo core for which the combination of NGVS photometry and follow-up spectroscopy allows us to reject foreground star co...

We present a deep multi-colour CCD mosaic of the Coma cluster (Abell 1656), covering 5.2 deg^2 in the B and r bands, and 1.3 deg^2 in the U band. This large, homogeneous data set provides a valuable low redshift comparison sample for studies of galaxies in distant clusters. In this paper we present our survey, and study the dependence of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) on passband and radial distance from the cluster centre. The U, B and r band LFs of the complete sample ...

Cosmological LCDM simulations of 12 M_vir~10^14 Msun galaxy groups have been performed, invoking star formation, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metallicity dependent radiative cooling, strong star-burst driven galactic super-winds and effects of a meta-galactic UV field. At z=0, intra-group light (IGL) fractions are found to be 12-45%. Low values refer to groups with only a small difference between the R-band magnitudes of the first and second ranked gro...

Intracluster planetary nebulae are a useful tracer of the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. We analyze our catalog of 318 intracluster planetary nebulae candidates found in 0.89 square degrees of the Virgo cluster. We give additional evidence for the great depth of the Virgo cluster's intracluster stellar population, which implies that the bulk of the intracluster stars come from late-type galaxies and dwarfs. We also provide evidence that the intracluster stars are ...

We present a study of the evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of clusters at $0.05 \leq z<0.35$ from the SDSS and WISE with halo masses in the range $6 \times 10^{13}M_\odot$ (massive groups) - $10^{15.5}M_\odot$ (Coma-like clusters). We analyse optical and infrared colours and stellar masses of BCGs as a function of the mass of their host haloes. We find that BCGs are mostly red and quiescent galaxies and that a minority ($\sim 9$\%) of them are star-f...

Nearly all intragroup (IGL) and intracluster light (ICL) comes from stars that are not bound to any single galaxy but were formed in galaxies and later unbound from them. In this review we focus on the physical properties - phase space properties, metallicity and age distribution - of the ICL and IGL components of the groups and clusters in the local universe, within 100 Mpc distance. Kinematic information on these very low surface brightness structures mostly comes from disc...

The stellar content of the intracluster light (ICL) provides unique insight into the hierarchical assembly process of galaxy clusters. However, the ICL is difficult to study due to its low surface brightness and large physical extent. We present optical spectra of three ICL regions in the Coma cluster, located between 100-180kpc from their nearest BCGs: NGC4889 and NGC4874. The mean surface brightness of the three ICL regions are {\mu}$_g$~25.3-26.2mag arcsec$^{-2}$. IFU spect...

Understanding gas flows into and out of the most massive dark matter structures in our Universe, galaxy clusters, is fundamental to understanding their evolution. Gas in clusters is well studied in the hot ($>$ 10$^{6}$ K) and cold ($<$ 10$^{4}$ K) regimes, but the warm gas component (10$^{4}$ - 10$^{6}$ K) is poorly constrained. It is challenging to observe directly, but can be probed through Ly$\alpha$ absorption studies. We produce the first systematic study of the warm ga...

We have undertaken a spectroscopic search for ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the dense core of the dynamically evolved, massive Coma cluster as part of the HST/ACS Coma Cluster Treasury Survey. UCD candidates were initially chosen based on color, magnitude, degree of resolution within the ACS images, and the known properties of Fornax and Virgo UCDs. Follow-up spectroscopy with Keck/LRIS confirmed 27 candidates as members of the Coma Cluster, a success rate > 60% for ...

In previous papers of this series, we developed a new algorithm for modeling the formation of star clusters in galaxy formation simulations. Here we investigate how dissolution of bound star clusters affects the shape of the cluster mass function and the metallicity distribution of surviving clusters. Cluster evolution includes the loss of stars that become unbound due to tidal disruption as well as mass-loss due to stellar evolution. We calculate the tidal tensor along clust...
