We study the clustering properties of the galaxy clusters detectable for the Planck satellite due to their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We take the past light-cone effect and the redshift evolution of both the underlying dark matter correlation function and the cluster bias factor into account. A theoretical mass-temperature relation allows us to convert the sensitivity limit of a catalogue into a minimum mass for the dark matter haloes hosting the clusters. We confirm ...

In this talk I focus on how the modelling of the mass-observable relation and the halo mass function can impact the accuracy and precision of cosmological constraints inferred from galaxy clusters. I present a new analysis of clusters detected in mm wavelengths by the Planck satellite, highlighting the need of an improved description and calibration for the mass-observable relation.

All-sky thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) maps are presented for assessing how well the PLANCK-mission can find and characterise clusters of galaxies, especially in the presence of primary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and various galactic and ecliptic foregrounds. The maps have been constructed from numerical simulations of structure formation in a standard LCDM cosmology and contain all clusters out to redshifts of z = 1.46 with masses exce...

The PLANCK mission is the most sensitive all-sky CMB experiment currently planned. The High Frequency Instrument (HFI) will be especially suited for observing clusters of galaxies by their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. In order to assess PLANCKs SZ-capabilities in the presence of spurious signals, a simulation is presented that combines maps of the thermal and kinetic SZ-effects with a realisation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), in addition to Galactic for...

We present a list of 15 clusters of galaxies, serendipitously detected by the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS), that have a high probability of detection by the Planck satellite. Three of them already appear in the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (ESZ) catalogue. The estimation of the Planck detection probability assumes the flat Lambda cold dark matter (LambdaCDM) cosmology most compatible with 7-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP7) data. It takes into account the XCS s...

The Planck satellite has proved to be a very successful mission, which has been operating flawlessly for more than 36 months. Its main purpose is to map the anisotropies of the CMB radiation at 9 frequencies, between 30 and 857 GHz, with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. After a description of the properties and cosmological aims of Planck, we review the results obtained during the first 1.6 full sky surveys relative to compact extragalactic sources and their implicat...

The hot gas in clusters of galaxies creates a distinctive spectral distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. The spectral signature of the SZ can be used to measure the CMB temperature at cluster redshift ($T_{\rm CMB}(z)$) and to constrain the monopole of the y-type spectral distortion of the CMB spectrum. In this work, we start showing the measurements of $T_{\rm CMB}(z)$ for a sample extracted from the Second Catalog of gal...

We provide a new $Y_{SZ} - M_{500}^{Y_X}$ scaling relation using a sample of clusters from the Planck Early Sunyaev-Zeldovich (ESZ) catalogue observed in X-rays by Chandra, and compare it to the results of the Planck collaboration from XMM-Newton observations of a subsample of the ESZ. We calibrate a mass bias for a subset of the Planck cosmological cluster sample using published weak-lensing data from the Canadian Cluster Cosmology Project and Multi Epoch Nearby Cluster Surv...

We use the billion-particle Hubble Volume simulations to make statistical predictions for the distribution of galaxy clusters that will be observed by the Planck Surveyor satellite through their effect on the cosmic microwave background -- the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We utilize the lightcone datasets for both critical density (tauCDM) and flat low-density (LambdaCDM) cosmologies: a `full-sky' survey out to $z \sim 0.5$, two `octant' datasets out to beyond $z=1$ and a 100 s...

(abridged) We present cosmological constraints obtained from galaxy clusters identified by their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect signature in the 2500 square degree South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel'dovich survey. We consider the 377 cluster candidates identified at z>0.25 with a detection significance greater than five, corresponding to the 95% purity threshold for the survey. We compute constraints on cosmological models using the measured cluster abundance as a function of mass a...
