We constrain the evolution of the galaxy mass and luminosity functions from the analysis of (public) multi-wavelength data in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) area, obtained from the GOODS and other projects, and including very deep high-resolution imaging by HST/ACS. A theoretical approach relying on evolutionary population synthesis models could help refining the search criteria in deep galaxy surveys on the basis of a better knowledge of the expected apparent photometric properties of high-redshift objects. The following is a brief discussion reviewing some relevant aspects of the question in order to allow a more critical appraisal to primeval galaxy recognition.

We present the first results of the VIsible Multiobject Spectrograph (VIMOS) ESO/GOODS program of spectroscopy of faint galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). The program complements the FORS2 ESO/GOODS campaign. 3312 spectra have been obtained in service mode with VIMOS at the ESO/VLT UT3. This paper presents the evolution of the clustering of the main population of galaxies from z=2.1 to z=0.2, from the first epoch VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), a magnitude limited sample with 17.5<=I_{AB}<=24. This paper describes the first data release (DR1) of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). The DR1 includes all low-resolution spectroscopic data obtained in 276.9 arcmin2 of the CANDELS-COSMOS and CANDELS-ECFDS survey areas, including accurate spectroscopic redshifts z_spec and individual spectra obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT. Recent advances in stellar population modelling and avalanches of data from mega-surveys have revived the interest in techniques to extract information about galaxy evolution from integrated spectra. This contribution provides an informal and (hopefully) pedagogical, but inevitably biased and incomplete introduction to this field. Emphasis is given to the several choices one has to make in the process of modelling galaxy spectra.
