A review of the present observational and theoretical status of elliptical galaxies is presented with the aim to clarify whether the monolithic or the hierarchical, is a more viable scenario for the origin of these structures. We describe the dynamical structure of elliptical galaxies using photometric and spectroscopic data, in particular 3D observations from integral field spectrographs, with emphasis on properties such as brightness distribution, velocity profiles, central...

We present results of a study of the stellar age distributions in the sample of elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified at z=0 in four simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. The simulations show that the formation of most stars in each ELO of the sample is a consequence of violent dynamical events, either fast multiclump collapse at high z, or mergers at lower z. This second way can explain the age spread as well as the dynamical peculiari...

The nature of the extremely red galaxies is poorly known, the critical issue being whether they are old ellipticals at $z>1.5$ or distant star-forming galaxies strongly reddened by dust extinction. Here we review the little we know about them, and we present recent and preliminary results from our ongoing submillimeter -- millimeter observations.

The far-ultraviolet is the most rapidly evolving portion of the spectrum in both very young galaxies and very old galaxies. The ``UV upturn'' in the spectra of elliptical galaxies shortward of 2000 Angstroms offers a promising probe of the ages and chemical evolution of very old galaxies. In early-type non-active galaxies with the bluest 1550-V colors, the bulk of the emission arises from Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars, along their evolution from the zero-age HB to the...

Far-ultraviolet radiation is a ubiquitous, if unanticipated, phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and early-type spiral bulges. It is the most variable photometric feature associated with old stellar populations. Recent observational and theoretical evidence shows that it is produced mainly by low-mass, small-envelope, helium-burning stars in extreme horizontal branch and subsequent phases of evolution. These are probably descendents of the dominant, metal rich population of the...

Globular clusters are valuable fossil records of the formation and evolution of their host galaxies. The color distribution of elliptical galaxy globular cluster systems indicates an episodic formation history, consistent with a merger origin for these galaxies. Spectroscopic studies of globular cluster systems are a promising route to further constrain models of elliptical galaxy formation. They also provide a useful probe of the mass distribution of ellipticals at large rad...

We revisit the scaling relations and star-forming histories of local elliptical galaxies using a novel selection method applied to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7. We combine two probability-based automated spectroscopic and morphological classifications of about 600000 galaxies with z<0.25 to isolate true elliptical galaxies. Our sample selection method does not introduce artificial cuts in the parameters describing the galaxy but instead it associates to every object a wei...

The formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies (EGs) is still an open question. In particular, recent observations suggest that elliptical galaxies are not only simple spheroidal systems of old stars. In this paper we analyze a sample of elliptical galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to study the star-forming activity in local elliptical galaxies. Among these 487 ellipticals we find that 13 EGs show unambiguous evidence of recent star-formation ac...

In order to know the formation epoch of the oldest elliptical galaxies as a function of mass and observed redshift, a statistical analysis for 333 extremely red objects (EROs) classified as old galaxies (OGs) at 0.8<z<2.3 is carried out. Once we get M_V and (B-V) at rest for each galaxy, we calculate the average variation of this intrinsic color with redshift and derive the average age through a synthesis model (the code for the calculation of the age has been made publicly a...

(Abridged) We study the stellar populations of 14 elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. We propose an alternative approach to the standard side-band method to measure equivalent widths (EWs). Our Boosted Median Continuum maps the EWs more robustly than the side-band method, minimising the effect from neighbouring absorption lines and reducing the age-metallicity degeneracy. We concentrate on Balmer lines (Hbeta,Hgamma,Hdelta), the G band and the 4000A break as age-sensiti...
