Rotational Bose-Einstein condensates can exhibit quantized vortices as topological excitations. In this study, the ground and excited states of the rotational Bose-Einstein condensates are systematically studied by calculating the stationary points of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. Various excited states and their connections at different rotational frequencies are revealed in solution landscapes constructed with the constrained high-index saddle dynamics method. Fou...

We study a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions in a regime where a roton spectrum emerges. We show that the roton spectrum is clearly revealed in the static and dynamic structure factors which can be measured using Bragg spectroscopy. We develop and validate a theory based on the local density approximation for the dynamic structure factor.

Vortex configurations in rotating Bose-Einstein condensed gases trapped in power-law and anharmonic potentials are studied. When the confining potential is steeper than harmonic in the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation, vortices with quantum numbers larger than one are energetically favorable if the interaction is weak enough. Features of the wave function for small and intermediate rotation frequencies are investigated numerically.

We study the properties of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in parabolic traps, with coherence length large compared to the system size. In this limit, it has been shown that unusual groundstates form which cannot be understood within a conventional many-vortex picture. Using comparisons with exact numerical results, we show that these groundstates can be well-described by a model of non-interacting ``composite fermions''. Our work emphasises the similarities between the no...

The aim of this paper is to perform a numerical and analytical study of a rotating Bose Einstein condensate placed in a harmonic plus Gaussian trap, following the experiments of \cite{bssd}. The rotational frequency $\Omega$ has to stay below the trapping frequency of the harmonic potential and we find that the condensate has an annular shape containing a triangular vortex lattice. As $\Omega$ approaches $\omega$, the width of the condensate and the circulation inside the cen...

Using the coarse grain averaged hydrodynamic approach, we calculate the excitation spectrum of vortex lattices sustained in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The spectrum gives the frequencies of the common-mode longitudinal waves in the hydrodynamic regime, including those of the higher-order compressional modes. Reasonable agreement with the measurements taken in a recent JILA experiment is found, suggesting that one of the longitudinal modes reported in the experiment is...

We present a calculation of the low lying spectrum of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that in a cylindrical geometry, there exist two linear branches, one associated to usual acoustic excitation, the other corresponding to a twisting mode of the vortex lattice. Using a hydrodynamical approach we derive the elasticity coefficient of the vortex lattice and calculate the spectrum of condensate in a three dimensionnal harmonic trap with cylindrical symmetry.

Motivated by experiments in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we compare predictions of a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) for dynamics of one and two individual vortices in the rotating BECs with those of the partial differential equation (PDE). In particular, we characterize orbitally stable vortex configurations in a symmetric harmonic trap due to a cubic repulsive interaction and the steady rotation. The ODE system is analyzed in details and the PDE ...

We present a new method to propagate rotating Bose-Einstein condensates subject to explicitly time-dependent trapping potentials. Using algebraic techniques, we combine Magnus expansions and splitting methods to yield any order methods for the multivariate and nonautonomous quadratic part of the Hamiltonian that can be computed using only Fourier transforms at the cost of solving a small system of polynomial equations. The resulting scheme solves the challenging component of ...

The theoretical investigation of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates has mainly focused on the emergence of quantum vortex states and the condensed properties of such systems. In the present work, we concentrate on other facets by examining the impact of rotation on the ground state of weakly interacting bosons confined in anharmonic potentials computed both at the mean-field level and particularly at the many-body level of theory. For the many-body computations, we employ the...
