We performed systematic measurements of magnetic susceptibility on single crystals of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on Sr-concentration demonstrates a step-like pattern upon doping at {\it x}$\sim$0.08 as the crystal structure changes from low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) to low-temperature orthorhombic (LTO) phase at low temperature. Upon cooling, an anomalous upturn in the susceptibility was observed at the structural phase transition between the LTT-LTO phases under the magnetic field parallel to {\it c}-axis.

The normal-state magnetotransport properties of La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals with x=0.095 are measured; at this composition, a structural transition to a low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase occurs without suppression of superconductivity. None of the measured properties (in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall coefficient) shows any sudden change at the LTT phase transition, indicating that the occurrence of the LTT phase does not necess...

We have measured the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) and the diamagnetic susceptibility of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals in various magnetic fields. We observed a field-induced evolution from an apparent Tc phase to an intrinsic Tc1 = 15 K or Tc2 = 30 K phase characterized by "magic" hole concentration which is commensurate with that of a two dimensional electronic lattice. The onset Tc of the intrinsic superconducting phases remains robust up to H = 5 Tesla. We sugg...

We report a detailed study of the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the spin susceptibility for a single crystal of La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4). From a quantitative analysis, we find that the temperature-dependent anisotropy of the susceptibility, observed in both the paramagnetic and stripe-ordered phases, directly indicates that localized Cu moments dominate the magnetic response. A field-induced spin-flop transition provides further corroboration for the role of ...

We have grown a single crystal of La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ in which the Sr concentration, x, continuously changes from 0.24 to 0.29 in the overdoped regime and obtained many pieces of single crystals with different x values by slicing the single crystal. From detailed measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, chi, of each piece, it has been found that the absolute value of chi at the measured lowest temperature 2 K, |chi_2K_|, on field cooling rapidly decreases with increasing x...

We report direction-dependent susceptibility and resistivity measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. These crystals have rectangular needle-like shapes with the crystallographic "c" direction parallel or perpendicular to the needle axis, which, in turn, is in the applied field direction. At optimal doping we find finite diamagnetic susceptibility above $T_{c}$, namely fluctuating superconductivity (FSC), only when the field is perpendicular to the planes. ...

We report on detailed sucseptibility and magnetization studies in La{1-x}Sr{x}MnO3 for x<=0.2. We arrive at a phase diagram which shows a ferromagnetic ground state for 0.1<=x<=0.15 followed by a canted antiferromagnetic phase at higher temperatures, not in agreement with present canonical conjectures. The phase diagram indicates the importance of structural aspects and superexchange interactions for the magnetic phases at low Sr concentrations.

The possible inhomogeneity of superconductivity has been investigated by means of bulk-sensitive probes, using La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ (LSCO) single crystals from the underdoped to optimally doped regime. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, chi, on field cooling and specific heat have revealed that both the absolute value of chi at 2 K, regarded as corresponding to the superconducting (SC) volume fraction in a sample, and the Sommerfeld constant, reflecting the density of...

The ESR signal of Gd spin probes (0.5 at %) as well as the static normal state susceptibility of Eu (J(Eu^{3+})=0) doped La_{2-x-y}Sr_xEu_yCuO_4 reveal pronounced changes of the Cu magnetism at the structural transition from the orthorhombic to the low temperature tetragonal phase for all non-superconducting compositions. Both a jumplike decrease of \chi as well as the ESR data show an increase of the in-plane magnetic correlation length in the LTT phase. From the Gd^{3+} ESR...

We have investigated the magnetism and the superconductivity of an electron-doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) using single crystal and powder samples by means of zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation (ZF-$\mu$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Muon spin rotation corresponding to antiferromagnetic (AF) order was observed in the sample with 0.04$\leq${\it x}$\leq$0.11. Changes in magnetic properties of Cu spins upon Ce doping were revealed because the ef...

A series of high-quality under-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 superconductor crystals with x = 0.063 - 0.125 were prepared by traveling-solvent floating-zone (TSFZ) technique. We found by dc magnetic measurements that, in this series of crystals, the superconducting transition was quite sharp in the vicinity of the hole densities of x = 1/16 and x = 1/9 while it was much broader away from these two "magic numbers", and the Meissner fraction showed a remarkable minimum near x = 1/9. We co...
