We measure the interaction of a single superfluid vortex with surface irregularities. While vortex pinning in superconductors usually becomes weaker at higher temperatures, we find the opposite behavior. The pinning steadily increases throughout our measurement range, from 0.15Tc to over 0.5Tc. We also find that moving the other end of the vortex decreases the pinning, so we propose Kelvin waves along the vortex as a depinning mechanism.

In a recent experiment Finne et al. discovered an intrinsic condition for the onset of quantum turbulence in $^3$He-B, that q=alpha/(1-alpha')<1, where alpha and alpha' are mutual friction parameters. The authors argued that this condition corresponds to Kelvin waves which are marginally damped, so for q>1 Kelvin waves cannot grow in amplitude and trigger vortex reconnections and turbulence. By analysing both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes of oscillations of a rotati...

The paper is concerned with the interpretation of many experiments that have been reported recently on the production of quantum turbulence by oscillating spheres, wires and grids in both 4He and 3He-B at temperatures so low that there is a negligible fraction of normal fluid. The experimental results are compared with those obtained in analogous experiments with classical fluids and with preliminary simulations of the quantum turbulence. Particular attention is paid to obser...

Recent work has highlighted the remarkable properties of quantum turbulence in superfluid helium II, consisting of a disordered tangle of quantised vortex lines which interact with each other and reconnect when they collide. According to Landau's two-fluid theory, these vortex lines move in a surrounding of thermal excitations called the normal fluid. Until now, the normal fluid has often been considered a passive background which simply provides the vortex lines with a mecha...

We show by direct numerical simulations that the turbulence generated by steadily heating a long cylinder immersed in helium~II is strongly inhomogeneous and consists of a dense turbulent layer of quantized vortices localized around the cylinder. We analyse the properties of this superfluid turbulence in terms of radial distribution of the vortex line density and the anisotropy and we compare these properties to the better known properties of homogeneous counterflow turbulenc...

We compare the decay of turbulence in superfluid $^4$He produced by a moving grid to the decay of turbulence created by either impulsive spin-down to rest or by intense ion injection. In all cases the vortex line density $L$ decays at late time $t$ as $L \propto t^{-3/2}$. At temperatures above 0.8 K, all methods result in the same rate of decay. Below 0.8 K, the spin-down turbulence maintains initial rotation and decays slower than grid turbulence and ion-jet turbulence. Thi...

Theory of superfluid $^4$He shows that, due to strong correlations and backflow effects, the density profile of a vortex line has the character of a density modulation and it is not a simple rarefaction region as found in clouds of cold bosonic atoms. We find that the basic features of this density modulation are represented by a wave--packet of cylindrical symmetry in which rotons with positive group velocity have a dominant role: The vortex density modulation can be viewed ...

We suggest a "minimal model" for the 3D turbulent energy spectra in superfluids, based on their two-fluid description. We start from the Navier-Stokes equation for the normal fluid and from the coarse-grained hydrodynamic equation for the superfluid component (obtained from the Euler equation for the superfluid velocity after averaging over the vortex lines) and introduce a mutual friction coupling term, proportional to the counterflow velocity, the average superfluid vortici...

We numerically study the spatial spreading of quantized vortex lines in low temperature liquid helium. The vortex lines, initially concentrated in a small region, diffuse into the surrounding vortex-free helium, a situation which is typical of many experiments. We find that this spreading, which occurs in the absence of viscosity, emerges from the interactions between the vortex lines, and can be interpreted as a diffusion process with effective coefficient equal to approxima...

Generic scaling laws, such as the Kolmogorov's 5/3-law, are milestone achievements of turbulence research in classical fluids. For quantum fluids such as atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, superfluid helium, and superfluid neutron stars, turbulence can also exist in the presence of a chaotic tangle of evolving quantized vortex lines. However, due to the lack of suitable experimental tools to directly probe the vortex-tangle motion, so far little is known about possible scaling...
