The influence of two important features of magnesium diboride on the macroscopic transport properties of polycrystalline MgB2 is discussed in the framework of a percolation model. While two band superconductivity does not have significant consequences in the field and temperature range of possible power applications, the opposite is true for the anisotropy of the upper critical field. The field dependence of the critical current densities strongly increases and the macroscopi...

The intrinsic properties of MgB$_2$ form the basis for all applications of this superconductor. We wish to emphasize that the application range of polycrystalline MgB$_2$ is limited by the upper critical field H$_{c2}$ and its anisotropy. In wires or tapes, the MgB$_2$ grains are randomly oriented or only slightly textured and the anisotropy of the upper critical field leads to different transport properties in different grains, if a magnetic field is applied and the current ...

We report the temperature dependent magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ and the superconducting critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in a 500-nm MgB$_{2}$ film. Our analysis of the experimental results takes into account the two gap nature of the superconducting state and indicates larger intraband diffusivity in the three-dimensional (3D) $\pi$ band compared to that in the two-dimensional (2D) $\sigma$ band. Direct comparison of our results with those reported previously for singl...

A thin film technology compatible with multilayer device fabrication is critical for exploring the potential of the 39-K superconductor magnesium diboride for superconducting electronics. Using a Hybrid Physical-Chemical Vapor Deposition (HPCVD) process, it is shown that the high Mg vapor pressure necessary to keep the MgB$_2$ phase thermodynamically stable can be achieved for the {\it in situ} growth of MgB$_2$ thin films. The films grow epitaxially on (0001) sapphire and (0...

We present experimental results of the upper critical fields $H_{\rm c2}$ of various MgB$_2$ thin films prepared by the molecular beam epitaxy, multiple-targets sputtering, and co-evaporation deposition apparatus. Experimental data of the $H_{\rm c2}(T)$ are successfully analyzed by applying the Gurevich theory of dirty two-band superconductivity in the case of $D_{\pi}/D_{\sigma}>1$, where $D_{\pi}$ and $D_{\sigma}$ are the intraband electron diffusivities for $\pi$ and $\si...

The Powder-In-Tube process has been employed to fabricate tape-like conductors with a strong metallic sheath and based on the newly discovered MgB2 superconducting phase. Long superconducting tapes have been prepared by packing reacted MgB2 powders inside pure Ag, Cu and Ni tubes which are then cold worked by drawing and rolling. Such tapes have shown transport properties as good as bulk MgB2 samples sintered in high pressure and high temperature conditions. At 4.2 K, the hig...

Upper critical fields of several magnesium diboride thin films were measured up to 28 T at the Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory (GHMFL) in Grenoble and up to 60 T at the Laboratoire National des Champs Magnetiques Pulses (LNCMP) in Toulouse. The samples were prepared both by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and hybrid physical chemical vapour deposition (HPCVD) technique; they have critical temperatures between 29 and 39 K and normal state resistivities between 5 and 250 ...

A MgB2 superconducting tape has been successfully prepared by a new way of boron diffusion into Mg tape. This tape superconductor has a Tc of 39 K with a sharp transition width of 0.4 K, high bulk critical current density jc of 6.7*10^5 A/cm^2 in zero field at 6 K, higher irreversibility line comparing to that of a high pressure synthesized bulk sample and very small crystalline grain with size in the scale of 10-200 nm.

Ultrathin MgB2 superconducting films with a thickness down to 7.5 nm are epitaxially grown on (0001) Al2O3 substrate by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition method. The films are phase-pure, oxidation-free and continuous. The 7.5 nm thin film shows a Tc(0) of 34 K, which is so far the highest Tc(0) reported in MgB2 with the same thickness. The critical current density of ultrathin MgB2 films below 10 nm is demonstrated for the first time as Jc ~ 10^6 A cm^{-2} for the ab...

We have investigated the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Hall coefficient of two well-characterized superconducting MgB$_2$ films (T$_{c0}$=38.0 K) in both the normal and superconducting states. Our results show that the normal-state Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and increases with decreasing temperature, independent of the applied magnetic field. Below T$_c$(H), R$_H$ decreases rapidly with temperature and changes sign before it reaches zero. The positi...
