In this paper, we analyze dissipative diamagnetism, arising due to dissipative cyclotron motion in two dimensions, in the light of the quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem. We consider a charged quantum particle moving in a harmonic well, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, and coupled to a quantum heat bath which is taken to be composed of an infinite number of independent quantum oscillators. The quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem te...

For the first time the kinetic description of Landau diamagnetism for degenerate collisional plasma is given. The correct expression for transverse electric conductivity of the quantum plasma, found by authors (see arXiv:1002.1017 [math-ph] 4 Feb 2010) is used. In work S. Dattagupta, A.M. Jayannavar and N. Kumar [Current science, V. 80, No. 7, 10 April, 2001] was discussed the important problem of dissipation (collisions) influence on Landau diamagnetism. The analysis of this...

Using information theoretic quantities like the Wehrl entropy and Fisher's information measure we study the thermodynamics of the problem leading to Landau's diamagnetism, namely, a free spinless electron in a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that such a problem can be "translated" into that of the thermal harmonic oscillator. We discover a new Fisher-uncertainty relation, derived via the Cramer-Rao inequality, that involves phase space localization and energy fluctuations...

The recently discovered anisotropy of the longitudinal resistance of two-dimensional electrons near half filling of high Landau levels is found to persist to much higher temperatures T when a large in-plane magnetic field B|| is applied. Under these conditions we find that the longitudinal resistivity scales quasi-linearly with B||/T. These observations support the notion that the onset of anisotropy at B||=0 does not reflect the spontaneous development of charge density modu...

This paper considers certain materials, including topological insulators, where spin rotation symmetry is broken much more strongly than time reversal symmetry. When these materials are in the diffusive regime, i.e. when they have disorder that is strong enough to cause an electron to scatter many times while crossing a sample, electrons and holes move in pairs that have zero spin and are insensitive to spin physics. Working within this spinless scenario, we show that Fourier...

This work investigates the influence of low temperature and broadened Landau levels on the thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional electron systems. The interplay between these two physical parameters on the magnetic field dependence of the chemical potential, the specific heat and the magnetization is calculated. In the absence of a complete theory that explains the Landau level broadening, experimental and theoretical studies in literature perform different model calcul...

The distribution of magnetic moments in finite ferromagnetic bodies was first investigated by Landau and Lifshitz in a famous paper [\textit{Phys. Z. Soviet Union}, \textbf{8}, 153 (1935)], where they obtained the domain structure of a ferromagnetic crystal at low temperatures, in the regime of saturated magnetization. In this article, we investigate the general properties of ferromagnetic domain walls of uniaxial crystals from the view point of the Landau free energy. We pre...

In this short paper we first give a very simple derivation of the Landauer formula for a 2-point conductance of QJ $G^{2P}$, based on the uncertainty principle. The aim of this is to introduce this central equation of quantum transport to a general audience. Next we analyse the dynamics of setting up a steady-state current in a simple many-electron system and use these observations to present physical basis and formal result for the 4-point conductance $G^{4P}$, rigorously re...

We give a method of describing thermodynamical transport phenomena, based on a quantum scattering theoretical approach. We consider a quantum system of particles connected to thermodynamical reservoirs by leads. The effects of the reservoirs are imposed as an asymptotic condition at the end of the leads. We derive an expression for a current of a conserved quantity, which is independent of the details of the Hamiltonian operator. The Landauer formula and its generalizations a...

Motivated by the precision attained by SQUID devices in measuring magnetic fields, we study in this article the thermodynamic behaviour of a fermion gas in two and three dimen\-sional spatial space with noncommutative coordinates and momenta. An explicit expression, both for Landau's diamagnetism and Pauli's paramagnetism, is obtained for the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the gas in two and three spatial dimensions. These results show that an upper bound for th...
