We demonstrate the epitaxial growth of optical-quality electrically-gated III-V ferromagnetic quantum structures. Photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals that initially unpolarized photoexcited holes in a GaAs quantum well become spin-polarized opposite to the magnetization of an adjacent digital ferromagnetic layer in the AlGaAs barrier. A vertical bias is used to tune the spin polarization from -0.4 to 6.3 percent at T = 5 K and B = 1 kG during which the luminescence becomes...

We investigate exciton spin memory in individual InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots via optical alignment and conversion of exciton polarization in a magnetic field. Quasiresonant phonon-assisted excitation is successfully employed to define the initial spin polarization of neutral excitons. The conservation of the linear polarization generated along the bright exciton eigenaxes of up to 90% and the conversion from circular- to linear polarization of up to 47% both demonst...

The carrier spin dynamics in a n-doped (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum well has been studied by time-resolved Faraday rotation and ellipticity techniques in the temperature range down to 430 milliKelvin. These techniques give data with very different spectral dependencies, from which nonetheless consistent information on the spin dynamics can be obtained, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The mechanisms of long-lived spin coherence generation are discussed for the cases of tr...

We report on efficient spin injection in p-doped InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot (QD) spin light emitting diode (spin-LED) under zero applied magnetic field. A high degree of electroluminescence circular polarization (Pc) ~19% is measured in remanence up to 100K. This result is obtained thanks to the combination of a perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB/MgO spin injector allowing efficient spin injection and an appropriate p-doped InGaAs/GaAs QD layer in the active region. By analyzing t...

We investigate the spin relaxation of $p$-type GaAs quantum wires by numerically solving the fully microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equations. We find that the quantum-wire size influences the spin relaxation time effectively by modulating the energy spectrum and the heavy-hole--light-hole mixing of wire states. The effects of quantum-wire size, temperature, hole density, and initial polarization are investigated in detail. We show that, depending on the situation, the spin rel...

In this letter, the first spin noise spectroscopy measurements in semiconductor systems of reduced effective dimensionality are reported. The non-demolition measurement technique gives access to the otherwise concealed intrinsic, low temperature electron spin relaxation time of n-doped GaAs (110) quantum wells and to the corresponding low temperature anisotropic spin relaxation. The Brownian motion of the electrons within the spin noise probe laser spot becomes manifest in a ...

The spin state of holes bound to Mn acceptors in GaMnAs is investigated by optical spectroscopy. Concentrations of Mn from 10^17 to 10^19 cm^-3 were studied as a function of magnetic field and temperature. The photoluminescence from recombination of electrons with holes bound in the Mn-acceptor complex (MAC) displays multiple spectral peaks. The circular polarization rho of these peaks increases with increasing magnetic field and saturates at rho ~= 1/3. This value of polariz...

This paper reviews the spin orientation of spin-3/2 holes in quantum wells. We discuss the Zeeman and Rashba spin splitting in hole systems that are qualitatively different from their counterparts in electron systems. We show how a systematic understanding of the unusual spin-dependent phenomena in hole systems can be gained using a multipole expansion of the spin density matrix. As an example we discuss spin precession in hole systems that can give rise to an alternating spi...

We investigate electron spin relaxation in $p$-type GaAs quantum wells from a fully microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach, with all the relevant scatterings, such as the electron-impurity, electron-phonon, electron-electron Coulomb, electron-hole Coulomb and electron-hole exchange (the Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanism) scatterings explicitly included. From this approach, we examine the relative importance of the D'yakonov-Perel' and Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms in wide ra...

We report on the observation of optical activity of quantum wells resulting in the conversion of the light polarization state controlled by the light propagation direction. The polarization conversion is detected in reflection measurements. We show that a pure $s$-polarized light incident on a quantum well is reflected as an elliptically polarized wave. The signal is drastically enhanced in the vicinity of the light-hole exciton resonance. We show that the polarization conver...
