We compare the steady state velocity distributions from our three-dimensional inelastic hard sphere molecular dynamics simulation for homogeneously heated granular media, with the predictions of a mean field-type Enskog-Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres [van Noije & Ernst, Gran. Matt. {\bf 1}, 57 (1998)]. Although we find qualitative agreement for all values of density and inelasticity, the quantitative disagreement approaches $\sim 40%$ at high inelasticity or de...

We study the dynamics of a 2d driven inelastic gas, by means of Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) techniques, i.e. under the assumption of Molecular Chaos. Under the effect of a uniform stochastic driving in the form of a white noise plus a friction term, the gas is kept in a non-equilibrium Steady State characterized by fractal density correlations and non-Gaussian distributions of velocities; the mean squared velocity, that is the so-called {\em granular temperature}, is...

These are notes prepared for presentation at the workshop "Challenges in Granular Matter" at the Abdus Salam Institute for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, August 2001. Revisions and figures will be added at a later date. Many features of real granular fluids under rapid flow are replicated by a system of smooth hard spheres with inelastic collisions. For such a system, it is tempting to apply standard methods of kinetic theory and hydrodynamics to calculate properties of inte...

A set of hard spheres with tangential inelastic collision is found to reproduce observations of real and numerical granular matter. After time is scaled so as to cancel energy dissipation due to inelastic collisions out, inelastically colliding hard spheres in two dimensional space come to have $1/f^\alpha$ fluctuation of total energy, non-Gaussian distribution of displacement vectors, and convective motion of spheres, which hard spheres with elastic collision, a conventional...

We investigate hydrodynamic noise in a dilute granular gas during the homogeneous cooling state, by means of a proper application of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithm. The DSMC includes a source of randomization which is not present in Molecular Dynamics (MD) for inelastic hard disks. Notwithstanding this difference, a fair quantitative agreement is found, including a violation of the fluctuation-dissipation relation for the noise amplitude of the same order ...

We examine two basic assumptions of kinetic theory-- binary collisions and molecular chaos-- using numerical simulations of sheared granular materials. We investigate a wide range of densities and restitution coefficients and demonstrate that kinetic theory breaks down at large density and small restitution coefficients. In the regimes where kinetic theory fails, there is an associated emergence of clusters of spatially correlated grains.

We studied the macroscopic statistical properties on the freely evolving quasi-elastic hard disk (granular) system by performing a large-scale (up to a few million particles) event-driven molecular dynamics systematically and found that remarkably analogous to an enstrophy cascade process in the decaying two-dimensional fluid turbulence. There are four typical stages in the freely evolving inelastic hard disk system, which are homogeneous, shearing (vortex), clustering and fi...

The kinetic energy distribution function satisfying the Boltzmann equation is studied analytically and numerically for a system of inelastic hard spheres in the case of binary collisions. Analytically, this function is shown to have a similarity form in the simple cases of uniform or steady-state flows. This determines the region of validity of hydrodynamic description. The latter is used to construct the phase diagram of granular systems, and discriminate between clustering ...

The importance of roughness in the modeling of granular gases has been increasingly considered in recent years. In this paper, a freely evolving homogeneous granular gas of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres is studied under the assumptions of the Boltzmann kinetic equation. The homogeneous base state reached by the system is studied from a theoretical point of view using a Sonine approximation, in contrast to a previous Maxwellian approach. A general theoretical descr...

We perform extensive MD simulations of two-dimensional systems of hard disks, focusing on the \emph{on}-collision statistical properties. We analyze the distribution functions of velocity, free flight time and free path length for packing fractions ranging from the fluid to the solid phase. The behaviors of the mean free flight time and path length between subsequent collisions are found to drastically change in the coexistence phase. We show that single particle dynamical pr...
