We report neutron inelastic scattering on single crystal 0.68Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-0.32PbTiO3 (PMN-0.32PT), a relaxor ferroelectric material that lies within the compositional range of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Data were obtained between 100 K and 600 K under zero and non-zero electric field applied along the cubic [001] direction. The lowest energy, zone-center, transverse optic phonon is strongly damped and softens slowly at high temperature; however the square of t...

We have studied the neutron diffuse scattering in the relaxor PMN. The diffuse scattering appears around the Burns temperature (~620K), indicating its origin from the polar nanoregions (PNR). While the relative diffuse intensities are consistent with previous reports, they are entirely different from those of the lowest-energy TO phonon. Because of that, it has been considered that this TO mode could not be the ferroelectric soft mode. Recently, a neutron scattering study has...

Cold neutron scattering experiments have been performed to explore the energy, temperature, and wave-vector dependence of the diffuse scattering and the transverse acoustic (TA) phonons in the relaxor PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O3. We have observed a weak, but definitive, diffuse scattering cross section above the Burns temperature T_d ~ 600 K. This cross section, which is most likely caused by chemical short-range order, persists down to 100 K, and coexists with the much stronger diffu...

The low-energy part of the vibration spectrum in PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$ (PMN) relaxor ferroelectric has been studied by neutron scattering above and below the Burns temperature, T$_d$. The transverse acoustic and the lowest transverse optic phonons are strongly coupled and we have obtained a model for this coupling. We observe that the lowest optic branch is always underdamped. A resolution-limited central peak and quasi-elastic scattering appear in the vicinity of the B...

Recent neutron scattering measurements performed on the relaxor ferroelectric Pb[(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.92Ti0.08]O3 (PZN-8%PT) in its cubic phase at 500 K, have revealed an anomalous ridge of inelastic scattering centered ~0.2 A-1 from the zone center (Gehring et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5216 (2000)). This ridge of scattering resembles a waterfall when plotted as a phonon dispersion diagram, and extends vertically from the transverse acoustic (TA) branch near 4 meV to the transverse ...

We propose a simple and solvable mean-field model of the scattering of transverse optic modes by Polarized Nano Regions (PNR) in the paraelectric phase of relaxor ferroelectrics. The PNR is assumed to be a ferroelectric sphere embedded in the host isotropic medium. The Lagrangian parameters are taken to be the same inside and outside the PNR, with exception of the soft-mode gap temperature dependence. The interaction of the Transverse (TO) with the longitudinal (LO) optic mod...

Neutron scattering techniques have been used to study the relaxor ferroelectric 0.68PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-0.32PbTiO3 denoted in this paper as 0.68PMN-0.32PT. On cooling, these relaxor ferroelectrics have a long-range ordered ferroelectric phase and the composition is close to that at which the ferroelectric structure changes from rhombohedral to tetragonal. It was found that above the Burns temperature of about 600K, the transverse optic mode and the transverse acoustic mode are str...

We report the spontaneous decay of a soft, optical phonon in a solid. Using neutron spectroscopy, we find that specific phonon lifetimes in the relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ are anomalously short within well-defined ranges of energy and momentum. This behavior is independent of ferroelectric order and occurs when the optical phonon with a specific energy and momentum can kinematically decay into two acoustic phonons with lower phase velocity. We interpret the well-kno...

Ferroelectric soft mode in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) has been clearly resolved by precision Raman scattering measurements for the first time. A polarization direction of the incident laser was chosen along [110] in cubic configuration in order to eliminate strong scattering components around 45 cm-1, which always smeared the low-frequency spectra of PMN. The soft mode frequency omega_s (=\sqrt{omega_0^2-gamma^2}) softens around 200 K, where omega_0 and gamma are a harmonic frequ...

The low-energy part of vibration spectrum in PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$ relaxor ferroelectric was studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the coexistence of a resolution-limited central peak with strong quasielastic scattering. The line-width of the quasielastic component follows a $\Gamma_0+Dq^2$ dependence. We find that $\Gamma_0$ is temperature-dependent. The relaxation time follows the Arrhenius law well. The presence of a relaxation mode associated with qua...
