In terms of linearized Gross-Pitaevskii equation we have studied the process of sound emission arises from a supersonic particle motion in a Bose-condensed gas. By analogy with the method used for description of Vavilov-Cherenkov phenomenon, we have found a friction work created by the particle generated condensate polarization. For comparison we have found radiation intensity of excitations. Both methods gives the same result.

We study the motion of a heavy tracer particle weakly coupled to a dense, weakly interacting Bose gas exhibiting Bose-Einstein condensation. In the so-called mean-field limit, the dynamics of this system approaches one determined by nonlinear Hamiltonian evolution equations. We prove that if the initial speed of the tracer particle is above the speed of sound in the Bose gas, and for a suitable class of initial states of the Bose gas, the particle decelerates due to emission ...

We study theoretically some effects produced by a propagation of the charged particles in dilute gases of alkali-metal atoms in the state with Bose-Einstein condensates. The energy change of the high-speed (relativistic) particle that corresponds to the Cherenkov effect in the condensate is investigated. We show that in the studied cases the particle can both loose and receive the energy from a gas. We find the necessary conditions for the particle acceleration in the multi-c...

We have obtained general expressions for the intensity of radiation, decelerating force, the rate of heating and acceleration of a small polarizable particle under the conditions of Cherenkov friction: at relativistic motion parallel to the surface of thick transparent dielectric plate. Comparison with the results of other authors is given.

We study the density modulation that appears in a Bose-Einstein condensate flowing with supersonic velocity against an obstacle. The experimental density profiles observed at JILA are reproduced by a numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then interpreted in terms of Cerenkov emission of Bogoliubov excitations by the defect. The phonon and the single-particle regions of the Bogoliubov spectrum are respectively responsible for a conical wavefront and a fan-...

The scattering of sound wave perturbations from vortex excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates(BEC) is investigated by numerical integration of the associated Klein-Gordon equation. It is found that, at sufficiently high angular speeds, sound wave-packets can extract a sizeable fraction of the vortex energy through a mechanism of superradiant scattering. It is conjectured that this superradiant regime may be detectable in BEC experiments.

It is well-known that a charged particle moving with constant velocity in vacuum does not radiate. In a medium the situation can be different. If the so called Cherenkov condition is satisfied, i.e. the particle velocity exceeds the phase speed in the medium, the particle will radiate. We show that a charge moving with a constant velocity in a gas of photons emits Cherenkov radiation, even in the gamma-ray regime, due to nonlinear quantum electrodynamic effects. Our result is...

The general theory of non-bremsstrahlung radiation by non-equilibrium medium is proposed on the base of the new (PRL, 2004; JETP, 2004) quantum theory of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (VCR), where Abraham's form for the true photon momentum in the medium is used (only which allows the introduction in the energy-momentum balance equations of the effective real photon mass in the medium). This gives the possibility to consider the ejection of VCR quantum directly by medium, as co...

Mathematical results on some models describing the motion of a tracer particle through a Bose-Einstein condensate are described. In the limit of a very dense, very weakly interacting Bose gas and for a very large particle mass, the dynamics of the coupled system is determined by classical non-linear Hamiltonian equations of motion. The particle's motion exhibits deceleration corresponding to friction (with memory) caused by the emission of Cerenkov radiation of gapless modes ...

We theoretically study the effect of ultraslow group velocities on the emission of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation in a coherently driven medium. We show that in this case the aperture of the group cone on which the intensity of the radiation peaks is much smaller than that of the usual wave cone associated with the Cherenkov coherence condition. We show that such a singular behaviour may be observed in a coherently driven ultracold atomic gas.

We study the motion of a heavy tracer particle weakly coupled to a dense ideal Bose gas exhibiting Bose-Einstein condensation. In the so-called mean-field limit, the dynamics of this system approaches one determined by nonlinear Hamiltonian evolution equations describing a process of emission of Cerenkov radiation of sound waves into the Bose-Einstein condensate along the particle's trajectory. The emission of Cerenkov radiation results in a friction force with memory acting ...
