We report on the observation of an anomalously high attenuation of high frequency surface acoustic waves by thin films of liquid $^{4}$He. The piezoelectric acoustic waves propagate along the surface of a lithium niobate substrate, which is coated with varying amounts of liquid helium. When the thickness of the helium layer is much larger than the wavelength of the surface acoustic wave on the substrate its attenuation is dominated by the excitation of compressional waves int...

We present a new technique for probing the properties of quantum fluids in restricted geometries. We have confined liquid 4He within microfluidic devices formed from glass wafers, in which one dimension is on the micro scale. Using an ultrasonic analog to Fabry-Perot interferometry, we have measured the first-sound of the confined liquid 4He, which can be a probe of critical behavior near the lambda point ($T_{\lambda}$). All thermodynamic properties of liquid $^4$He can be d...

Bulk superfluid helium supports two sound modes: first sound is an ordinary pressure wave, while second sound is a temperature wave, unique to inviscid superfluid systems. These sound modes do not usually exist independently, but rather variations in pressure are accompanied by variations in temperature, and vice versa. We studied the coupling between first and second sound in dilute $^3$He - superfluid $^4$He mixtures, between 1.6 K and 2.2 K, at $^3$He concentrations rangin...

The acoustic nucleation threshold for bubbles trapped in cavities has theoretically been predicted within the crevice theory by Atchley & Prosperetti [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 86, 1065-1084 (1989)]. Here, we determine this threshold experimentally, by applying a single pressure pulse to bubbles trapped in cylindrical nanoscopic pits ("artificial crevices") with radii down to 50 nm. By decreasing the minimum pressure stepwise, we observe the threshold for which the bubbles start to...

The bubble nucleation in superheated liquid can be controlled by adjusting the ambient pressure and temperature. At higher pressure the threshold energy for bubble nucleation increases and we have observed that the amplitude of the acoustic emission during vaporisation of superheated droplet decreases with increase in pressure at any given temperature. Other acoustic parameters such as the primary harmonic frequency and the decay time constant of the acoustic signal also decr...

A few years after the discovery of Bose Einstein condensation in several gases, it is interesting to look back at some properties of superfluid helium. After a short historical review, I comment shortly on boiling and evaporation, then on the role of rotons and vortices in the existence of a critical velocity in superfluid helium. I finally discuss the existence of a condensate in a liquid with strong interactions, and the pressure variation of its superfluid transition tempe...

The composition of the gaseous phase of cavitation bubbles and its role on the collapse remains to date poorly understood. In this work, experiments of single cavitation bubbles in aqueous ammonia serve as a novel approach to investigate the effect of the vapour contained in a bubble on its collapse. We find that the higher vapour pressure of more concentrated aqueous ammonia acts as a resistance to the collapse, reducing the total energy dissipation. In line with visual obse...

Within Density Functional Theory, we have calculated the energy of the transitions from the ground state to the first two excited states in the electron bubbles in liquid helium at pressures from zero to about the solidification pressure. For $^4$He at low temperatures, our results are in very good agreement with infrared absorption experiments. Above a temperature of $\sim 2$ K, we overestimate the energy of the $1s-1p$ transition. We attribute this to the break down of th...

Acoustic cavitation is known to trigger ice nucleation in supercooled water. Several competing and still debatable mechanisms have been proposed in the literature and are related to the pressure field in the vicinity of the bubble at the end of its collapse. Numerical simulations of the bubble dynamics show that during the bubble expansions in the bounces following the main collapse, the bubble core temperature reaches values far below 0 {\deg}C for time periods of about 500 ...

Path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations of liquid helium at negative pressure have been carried out for a temperature range from the critical temperature to below the superfluid transition. We have calculated the temperature dependence of the spinodal line as well as the pressure dependence of the isothermal sound velocity in the region of the spinodal. We discuss the slope of the superfluid transition line and the shape of the dispersion curve at negative pressures.
