The structural, magnetic and electronic properties of transition metal oxides reflect in atomic charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) allows us to perform an accurate investigation of all these electronic degrees. RXS combines high-Q resolution x-ray diffraction with the properties of the resonance providing information similar to that obtained by atomic spectroscopy (element selectivity and a large enhancement of scattering amplitude fo...

We report the first observation of `orbital truncation rods' -- the scattering arising from the termination of bulk orbital order at the surface of a crystal. The x-ray measurements, performed on a cleaved, single-layered perovskite, La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, reveal that while the crystallographic surface is atomically smooth, the orbital `surface' is much rougher, with an r.m.s. deviation from the average `surface' of ~0.7nm. The temperature dependence of this scattering shows evidenc...

A systematic study of the electronic structure in perovskite manganites is presented. The effective Hamiltonian is derived by taking into account the degeneracy of $e_g$ orbitals and strong electron correlation in Mn ions. The spin and orbital orderings are examined as functions of carrier concentration in the mean-field approximation applied to the effective Hamiltonian. We obtain the first order phase transition between ferromagnetic metallic and ferromagnetic insulating st...

The quadruple perovskite CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ is a topical multiferroic, in which the hierarchy of electronic correlations driving structural distortions, modulated magnetism, and orbital order is not well known and may vary with temperature. x-ray resonant elastic scattering (XRES) provides a momentum-resolved tool to study these phenomena, even in very small single crystals, with valuable information encoded in its polarization- and energy-dependence. We present an application ...

We have investigated orbital ordering in the half-doped manganite La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, which displays spin, charge and orbital ordering, by means of unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations on the multiband $p$-$d$ model. From recent experiment, it has become clear that La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ exhibits a cross-type $(z^2-x^2/y^2-z^2)$ orbital ordering rather than the widely believed rod-type $(3x^2-r^2/3y^2-r^2)$ orbital ordering. The calculation reveals that cross-...

Photo-excitation in complex oxides1 transfers charge across semicovalent bonds, drastically perturbing spin and orbital orders2. Light may then be used in compounds like magnetoresistive manganites to control magnetism on nanometre lengthscales and ultrafast timescales. Here, we show how ultrafast resonant soft x-ray diffraction can separately probe the photo-induced dynamics of spin and orbital orders in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4. Ultrafast melting of CE antiferromagnetic spin order is...

We present high resolution high energy and resonant x-ray diffraction results from La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 for x=0.55,0.575 and 0.60. These compounds show superlattice reflections at wavevectors of (h+-\delta,k+-\delta,l) and (h+-2\delta,k+-2\delta,l), arising from orbital ordering with associated Jahn-Teller distortions and charge ordering respectively. We observe a phase transition between the x=0.55 and x=0.575 doping levels. Samples with x=0.55 display structural characteristic...

We report on the observation of orbital excitations in YVO3 by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at energies across the vanadium L3 and oxygen K absorption edges. Due to the excellent experimental resolution we are able to resolve the intra-t2g excitations at 0.1-0.2 eV, 1.07 eV, and 1.28 eV, the lowest excitations from the t2g into the eg levels at 1.86 eV, and further excitations above 2.2 eV. For the intra-t2g excitations at 0.1-0.2 eV, the RIXS peaks sho...

We carried out temperature-dependent (20 - 550 K) measurements of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering on LaCoO$_3$ to investigate the evolution of its electronic structure across the spin-state crossover. In combination with charge-transfer multiplet calculations, we accurately quantized the renormalized crystal-field excitation energies and spin-state populations. We show that the screening of the on-site Coulomb interaction of 3d electrons is orbital selective and coupled t...

The emergence of superlattice periodicities at metal to insulator transitions in hole doped perovskite oxides responds to a rearrangement of the local atomic structure, and electron and spin density distribution. Originally, the ionic model based on a checkerboard- type atomic distribution served to describe the low temperature charge and orbital ordered (COO) phases arising in half- doped manganites. In the last years, the exploitation of resonant x- ray scattering (RXS) cap...
