Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons along the nodal direction of oxygen isotope substituted Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta reveals a distinct oxygen isotope shift near the electron-boson coupling "kink" in the electronic dispersion. The magnitude (a few meV) and direction of the kink shift are as expected due to the measured isotopic shift of phonon frequency, which are also in agreement with theoretical expectations. This demonstrates the participa...

We present the first detailed angle-resolved photoemission evidence that there are two types of carriers that contribute to the photoemission superconducting condensate in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$. Our data indicate that both itinerant and somewhat localized normal state carriers can contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs.

High-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors are characterized by a strong momentum-dependent anisotropy between the low energy excitations along the Brillouin zone diagonal (nodal direction) and those along the Brillouin zone face (antinodal direction). Most obvious is the d-wave superconducting gap, with the largest magnitude found in the antinodal direction and no gap in the nodal direction. Additionally, while antinodal quasiparticle excitations appear only below $T_c$, superconduc...

Very high energy resolution photoemission experiments on high quality samples of optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ show new features in the low-energy electronic excitations. A marked change in the binding energy and temperature dependence of the near-nodal scattering rates is observed near the superconducting transition temperature, $T_C$. The temperature slope of the scattering rate measured at low energy shows a discontinuity at ~$T_C$. In the superconduct...

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements with super-high resolution have been carried out on an optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ high temperature superconductor. New high energy features at $\sim$115 meV and $\sim$150 meV, besides the prominent $\sim$70 meV one, are found to develop in the nodal electron self-energy in the superconducting state. These high energy features, which can not be attributed to electron coupling with single phonon or magnetic re...

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission with variable excitation energies is used to disentangle bilayer splitting effects and intrinsic (self-energy) effects in the electronic spectral function near the ($\pi$,0)-point of differently doped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. In contrast to overdoped samples, where intrinsic effects at the ($\pi$,0)point are virtually absent, we find in underdoped samples \textit{intrinsic} effects in the superconducting-state ($\pi...

A Fermi arc is a disconnected segment of a Fermi surface observed in the pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors. This simple description belies the fundamental inconsistency in the physics of Fermi arcs, specifically that such segments violate the topological integrity of the band. Efforts to resolve this contradiction of experiment and theory have focused on connecting the ends of the Fermi arc back on itself to form a pocket, with limited and controversial success. Here...

We report that the doping and temperature dependence of photoemission spectra near the Brillouin zone boundary of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta exhibit unexpected sensitivity to the superfluid density. In the superconducting state, the photoemission peak intensity as a function of doping scales with the superfluid density and the condensation energy. As a function of temperature, the peak intensity shows an abrupt behavior near the superconducting phase transition temperature where pha...

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the doping dependence of the lifetime and the mass renormalization of the low energy excitations in the high-Tc cuprate (Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 along the zone diagonal. We find a linear energy de-pendence of the scattering rate for the underdoped samples and a quadratic energy depend-ence in the overdoped case. The mass enhancement of the quasiparticles due to the many body effects at the Fermi energy is found ...

The renormalization of quasiparticle (QP) dispersion in bilayer high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is investigated theoretically by examining respectively the interactions of the QP with spin fluctuations (SF) and phonons. It is illustrated that both interactions are able to give rise to a kink in the dispersion around the antinodes (near $(\pi,0)$). However, remarkable differences between the two cases are found for the peak/dip/hump structure in the lineshape, the QP weight, and the int...
