We study the dc conductance and current fluctuations in diffusive voltage biased SNS junctions with a tunnel barrier inside the mesoscopic normal region. We find that at subgap voltages, eV<2Delta/n, the current associated with the chain of n Andreev reflections is mapped onto the quasiparticle flow through a structure of n+1 voltage biased barriers connected by diffusive conductors. As a result, the current-voltage characteristic of a long SNINS structure obeys Ohm's law, in...

We report transport measurements down to T=60mK of SININ and SNIN structures in the diffusive limit. We fabricated Al-AlOx/Cu/AlOx/Cu (SININ) and Al/Cu/AlOx/Cu (SNIN) vertical junctions. For the first time, a zero bias anomaly was observed in a metallic SININ structure. We attribute this peak of conductance to coherent multi-reflections of electrons between the two tunnel barriers. This conductance maximum is quantitatively fitted by the relevant theory of mesoscopic SININ st...

Tunneling conductance in diffusive normal metal / insulator / s-wave superconductor (DN/I/S) junctions is calculated for various situations by changing the magnitudes of the resistance and Thouless energy in DN and the transparency of the insulating barrier. The generalized boundary condition introduced by Yu. Nazarov [Superlattices and Microstructures 25 1221 (1999)] is applied, where the ballistic theory by Blonder Tinkham and Klapwijk (BTK) and the diffusive theory by Volk...

We investigate the effect of the superlattice structure on the single particle transport along the c-axis of high temperature superconductors. In particular, superlattice systems that consists of metals/insulators and d-wave superconductors (NS/IS superlattice) are considered. We find that for the NS superlattice in the large mass anisotropy limit of the metal, the density of state in the low energy section is bulk d-wave like except that the position of the quasi-particle pe...

We report new measurements on sup-gap energy structure originating from multiple Andreev reflections in mesoscopic SNS junctions. The junctions were fabricated in a planar geometry with high transparency superconducting contacts of Al deposited on highly diffusive and surface d-doped n++-GaAs. For samples with a normal GaAs region of active length 0.3um the Josephson effect with a maximal supercurrent Ic=3mA at T=237mK was observed. The sub-gap structure was observed as a ser...

We determine the quasi-particle excitation spectrum in the normal region of a narrow ballistic superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor (SNS) Josephson contact. Increasing the effective chemical potential in the contact converts the electronic levels into Andreev-levels carrying supercurrent. The opening of these superchannels leads to a supercurrent quantization which exhibits a non-universal behavior in general and we discuss its dependence on the junction parameters.

Nonlocal supercurrent was observed in mesoscopic planar SNS Josephson junction with additional normal metal electrodes when nonequilibrium quasiparticles were injected from the normal metal electrode in one of the superconducting banks of the Josephson junction in the absence of net transport current through the junction. We claim that the effect observed is due to a supercurrent counterflow appearing to compensate the quasiparticle flow in the SNS weak link. We have measured...

We have investigated low-temperature transport properties of two-dimensional arrays of superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor (SNS) junctions. It has been found that in two-dimensional arrays of SNS junctions (i) a change in the energy spectrum within an interval of the order of the Thouless energy is observed even when the thermal broadening far exceeds the Thouless energy for a single SNS junction; (ii) the manifestation of the subharmonic energy gap structure (SGS) w...

We have made a systematic investigation of charge transport in 1D chains of Josephson junctions where the characteristic Josephson energy is much less than the single-island Cooper-pair charging energy, $E_\mathrm{J}\ll E_{CP}$. Such chains are deep in the insulating state, where superconducting phase coherence across the chain is absent, and a voltage threshold for conduction is observed at the lowest temperatures. We find that Cooper-pair tunneling in such chains is complet...

We investigate the current-voltage characteristics of high-transparency superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) junctions with the specific tunnel resistance below 30 kOhm per square micron. The junctions were fabricated from different superconducting and normal conducting materials, including Nb, Al, AuPd and Cu. The subgap leakage currents were found to be appreciably larger than those given by the standard tunnelling model. We explain our results using the model of two...
